Clinical Applications of the Adult Attachment Interview ReviewI bought this book after hearing one of the editor's speak at a recent child welfare conference.Increasingly, we are recognizing that the attachment history of the parents greatly influences the mood, temperament, behavior, and attachment patterns of the child. Thus, there really are intergenerational patterns to attachment. While some of this is common sense, it can be difficult for people to wrap their minds around. As an example, I work primarily with foster and adopted children and their families; many of my adult clients can't understand how a child who was only with a birth parent for a brief period of time can be so affected with respect to their attachment patterns. This is why I found the chapter in this book on foster parents to be useful and interesting.
Most of the contributors to this volume are researchers. The book is therefore not a 'how-to' for clinicians. But it builds upon what we know about attachment patterns and it is a useful text. If you have read 'Parenting from the Inside Out' by Siegel & Hartzell, the concepts they discussed will be familiar to you. Whereas they failed to instruct the reader how to put the AAI into practice, however, these authors do, but again, not in a cookbook manner.
So, my advice for clinicians is to read this book for the theory (and a little about practice), as well as Hughes' work, which focuses more on the 'how-to' and 'why' of the work.
