Beyond the Big Test: Noncognitive Assessment in Higher Education (Jossey-Bass Higher and Adult Education) ReviewBeyond the Big Test: Noncognitive Assessment in Higher Education, by William E. Sedlacek, provides a method of admitting students to higher education based on well-researched noncognitive variables that predict success as well as, or better than, traditional standardized tests of academic achievement. For anyone who values diversity in higher education, this book is a "must-read."
Proceeding from the belief that "current assessment[s]...measure limited kinds of abilities and potentials for limited groups" and that "traditional tests do not give us information on a range of attributes that are crucial to those who have not been socialized in traditional ways" (p. 141), Sedlacek argues that there are many variables that can predict success in academia beyond standard testing, and engages the reader in his discussion. In Beyond the Big Test... Sedlacek offers a viable alternative to (perhaps "addition to" is more appropriate) current admissions standards that are based solely on scores on standardized tests of academic knowledge.
This is an excellent resource on a timely topic. It is well-researched, theoretically sound, and easy to understand. Additionally, it provides a means of conducting noncognitive assessment via an assortment of normed questionnaires anyone should be able to implement.
Sedlacek is clearly more interested in making this information available to everyone than he is in lining his own pockets, since all the information needed to implement this system is included in the book. I highly recommend this book for anyone who values diversity and is seeking an equitable process of admitting students to higher education.Beyond the Big Test: Noncognitive Assessment in Higher Education (Jossey-Bass Higher and Adult Education) Overview
