Discovering Successful Pathways in Children's Development: Mixed Methods in the Study of Childhood and Family Life (The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Series on Mental Health and De) ReviewThe subtitle of this book, Mixed Methods in the Study of Childhood and Family Life, is a better indication of its content and value than the main title. The chapters in the book are detailed descriptions of how the authors used what are usually called "mixed methods"--combining quantitative (experimental designs, surveys, analyses of demographic and other data) and qualitative (interviews, participant observation, ethnography) methods and approaches--to study children and families in a variety of contexts and for a wide range of purposes, including several evaluations of federally-funded programs to help families living in poverty. There are also commentaries by other experts on many of the chapters, and a summary synthesis of the lessons from these studies by a respected authority on mixed method research, Jennifer Greene.
Many of the studies report conclusions that sharply contradict established views of what works to help children and families in poverty. However, the main point of the book is that these conclusions could not have been reached without a systematic integration of qualitative and quantitative methods, data, and ways of thinking. The studies reported in this book are exemplary in their commitment to this integration, and the chapters provide models and guidance on how to accomplish this that go well beyond existing research methods textbooks, even textbooks on mixed method research. There is nothing else available that contains such in-depth accounts of actual mixed method studies. I have used this book in my course on mixed method research, along with Jennifer Greene's textbook, and my students (mostly doctoral students in education and nursing) gave it high ratings. It's not light reading, but for anyone thinking of doing research on these issues, it's indispensable.Discovering Successful Pathways in Children's Development: Mixed Methods in the Study of Childhood and Family Life (The John D. and Catherine T.
