The Marriage Clinic: A Scientifically Based Marital Therapy (Norton Professional Books) ReviewThis book by John Gottman deals with nearly all aspects of marital therapy: myths and mistakes, assessment methods, and interventions.
It is strictly research oriented, i.e. Gottman does not follow a special theoretical school such as psychodynamic of cognitive-behavioral marital therapy. His findings from the last 30 years include many diversions from classical marital therapy as well as some really surprising finding. Let me give you just one example: active listening, the core concept of many therapies is NOT fundamental for a good marriage. Actually, even happily married couples very rarely use active listening. This is not to say that active listening is harmful, it is just not necessary for developing and maintaining a happy relationship.
Gottman offers his own version of clinically proven interventions, their respective assumptions and sections for dealing with problems.
This book is aimed for therapists and counselors. They will find a wealth of information, especially a lot of assessment instruments.
Every professional in the area of marital therapy should read this book. You will surely find many recommendations. After all, it's the clients' health you are serving. Gottman's interventions have proven to be greatly beneficial for couples: his clients divorce half as often as clients treated with traditional marriage therapy.
That alone should be reason enough to actively use his methods.
The interested lay person should read Gottman's book "The 7 principles for making marriage work" which explains his findings in easy to understand language.

"Love and War in Intimate Relationships" is an important book that will be enjoyed by psychobiologically oriented therapists or anyone interested in learning about a psychobiological approach to couple therapy.
Throughout the book various case studies are analyzed and you can read the play-by-play action that occurs between therapist and client and between client and client. The people who participated in the therapy sessions were videotaped so many minute details were captured for analysis.
One of the ideas that is prevalent throughout and completely fascinating is the idea that the cause of many problems seems to be unresolved issues with a primary caregiver in the past. These primary attachment figures influence the brain's growth and how it functions later in life. It is very likely that clients are attracted to individuals who treat them in similar ways their parents did.
Why are humans so complicated? Well this book also goes into detail about brain structure and functions.
For the most part, this book will introduce you to techniques used by two therapists who moderate, regulate and analyze a therapy session in real time. As a therapist you will learn how to organize your office for more effective therapy sessions. The days of just having one couch seems to be gone and now you may want a chair, a loveseat and two rolling chairs. Other props are explained and details are given on how they can be used.
I'd recommend this to therapists because that seems to be the reason this book was written. It is a good introduction to a modern way of providing effective therapy to clients. Also if you have any interest in psychology this will be a fascinating read.
