Spirituality And Mental Health: Clinical Applications Review.I was overjoyed to find out that this book was in existence!!! It was long over due in my way of thinking. The information in this book is much needed and I found the insight of the author to be something I coveted for all the doctor's and professionals I have encountered in the past ten years in helping both of my children in their recovery path, dealing with bipolar disorder. The author understands that we can only expect true connection with one another when we treat not just the symptoms but the whole person, ESPECIALLY, their spiritual being, if we expect any kind of true recovery from mental illness. I will be reading and sharing this book, many times, with many people. and I thank the author from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to put his thoughts in book form to share with us allSpirituality And Mental Health: Clinical Applications Overview

Child and Adolescent Psychological Disorders: A Comprehensive Textbook (Oxford Textbooks in Clinical Psychology) ReviewPerhaps the most crucial social issue of our time is addressed in as comprehensive and skillful a manner as I have seen. Of particular value is chapter 21, "Impulse Control Disorders Not Elsewhere Classified," wherein Steven Thurber and associate, clarify and successfully delineate a long-time problem within the monumentally crucial arena of Disorders of the Young. This specific chapter, in tandem with the overall approach of the book, affords the reader the valuable distinction between generally accepted mythical and unsubstantiated beliefs (i.e., beliefs that are almost "Hollywood-like" portrayals and "theories" of human behavior), and scientifically demonstrated and supported realities of the human condition.Child and Adolescent Psychological Disorders: A Comprehensive Textbook (Oxford Textbooks in Clinical Psychology) Overview

Microaggressions and Marginality: Manifestation, Dynamics, and Impact ReviewDr. Sue has once again, put together critical information in understanding the pervasiveness and tremendous harm of "micro-messages." This examination of its impact in the form of "aggressive" communication, policies and assumptions is a valuable read for anyone working within multicultural organizations, which should be everyone. He has assembled experts in their field who share not only the dynamics of "microaggressions," but also their impact, personally and to organizational culture. I am a faculty advisor for a number of "cultural groups," faculty in a Lead Scholars Social Justice program and an MSW student. This is valuable information for all my roles.Microaggressions and Marginality: Manifestation, Dynamics, and Impact Overview

The School Services Sourcebook: A Guide for School-Based Professionals ReviewThe book is a wonderful resource for anyone working in the field of school social work, or even in working with children and family services. Do not be intimidated by the size of the book. The size is reflective of how much valuable and effective information you can use as a clinician, administrator, intern, or other social work professional.
Off the bat, one will observe that the layout and composition are sharp and concise. I was impressed with the chapter titles, which are helpful when you are searching quickly for an intervention or resource. The chapters are short and to the point, unlike many textbooks that make a point to drag out topics and ideas. This is especially great for clinicians, who can use the book to brush up on techniques without having to take a whole course on the subject. In addition, there are several chapters that detail how to present and what to present to shareholders, faculty, and other interested persons in the field of school social work. As a clinician, administrator, or teacher, the book is easy and fresh.
For administrators, the book presents an easily accessible resource to help teachers and school faculty with working with the different age groups within the school system. Similarly, it presents the information in a digestible way where school faculty can get practical use out of the techniques and interventions. In addition, the book is a good resource for Professional Development topics, as well as for Crisis Team interventions.
It's also a great resource for interns. When you are just starting out, it's hard to keep track of all the interventions that you will learn. The way the chapters are divided will help not only while working in field, but also when writing paper. The chapters explain what population the intervention works for as well as the research behind the intervention. This is especially useful for grasping an understanding of Evidence-Based Practices (EBP). Since the mental health field is shifting towards the use of EBPs in delivering mental health services, this book will help interns find and use effective EBPs while in the field. And, to be honest, the chapters are quick reads which will lessen the reading load for graduate students.
There aren't really any gripes with the book. Besides the size--it would work better in a more concise form, perhaps over several volumes--I would highly recommend this book for anyone social work professional, school administrator, or student in the field of school social work.

Psychoanalytic Case Formulation ReviewNancy Mc Williams is imminently readable. She has the gift of de-mystifying difficult concepts; or, put another way, she does not apparently have ego-needs that compel her to make the concepts of psychotherapy, or the field itself, obtuse. She also has quite an ability to cut-to-the-chase. Consider, for example, her description of "insight": "Part of the emphasis on understanding is that the two of them [patient and therapist] need something to talk about while the nonspecific relational factors are doing their quiet healing." Her personality shows through in her writing, so you will learn at two levels -- what she is telling you explicity, which is invaluable, and what she is telling you implicitly -- what it is about her that makes her so effective -- and believe me, you would want her to be your therapist, supervisor, whatever. As an aside, she seems to have a particular interest in, and gift for working with, addicts and sociopaths. Read the book, make charts, keep it at hand. It's a good read.Psychoanalytic Case Formulation Overview

The Marriage Clinic: A Scientifically Based Marital Therapy (Norton Professional Books) ReviewThis book by John Gottman deals with nearly all aspects of marital therapy: myths and mistakes, assessment methods, and interventions.
It is strictly research oriented, i.e. Gottman does not follow a special theoretical school such as psychodynamic of cognitive-behavioral marital therapy. His findings from the last 30 years include many diversions from classical marital therapy as well as some really surprising finding. Let me give you just one example: active listening, the core concept of many therapies is NOT fundamental for a good marriage. Actually, even happily married couples very rarely use active listening. This is not to say that active listening is harmful, it is just not necessary for developing and maintaining a happy relationship.
Gottman offers his own version of clinically proven interventions, their respective assumptions and sections for dealing with problems.
This book is aimed for therapists and counselors. They will find a wealth of information, especially a lot of assessment instruments.
Every professional in the area of marital therapy should read this book. You will surely find many recommendations. After all, it's the clients' health you are serving. Gottman's interventions have proven to be greatly beneficial for couples: his clients divorce half as often as clients treated with traditional marriage therapy.
That alone should be reason enough to actively use his methods.
The interested lay person should read Gottman's book "The 7 principles for making marriage work" which explains his findings in easy to understand language.
By and large, this book is an excellent example of a professional resource book! The Marriage Clinic: A Scientifically Based Marital Therapy (Norton Professional Books) Overview

Clinical Handbook of Couple Therapy, Fourth Edition ReviewIt was with a bit of nostalgia that I decided to read and review the Clinical Handbook of Couple Therapy: 4th edition, edited by Alan Gurman, Ph.D. Owing much of my current clinical interest in couple therapy to previous editions of this book read while in graduate school, I was eager to learn what the newest edition had in store. I was pleasantly surprised to find that rather than reading the same book with new chapters tacked to the end, each of the chapters in this edition have been significantly updated with the most current and clinically relevant research. This rather hefty 746 page volume is literally packed, cover to cover with the latest in theory and clinical practice of couple therapy with chapters authored by only the most prominent experts in the field. The book is divided in halves with subsections organizing common groups of chapters. The first half of the book is devoted to models of couple therapy and the second half focuses on applications of couple therapy with special populations, problems and issues in mind.
It was immediately evident to me in Part I that Dr. Gurman had given the authors very specific instructions on how to structure each chapter. In Part I each chapter is written by authors who are expert at a specific orientation of couple therapy. Chapters are organized by Behavioral, Humanistic/Existential, Psychodynamic, Social Constructionist, Systemic, and Integrative Approaches. Each chapter addresses the historical underpinnings of the model, the theory of marital distress, specific structure of approaching therapy (i.e. assessment and technical intervention.) in addition to a case example. The end result was a perfect and well uniformed comparative study of every major approach to couple therapy that is being practiced today. I have yet to read a book that has done this quite so elegantly. I was particularly fascinated by each authors' description of what their conception of a "healthy/well-functioning vs. pathological/dysfunctional" marriage. It was a treat reading some of the most premier researchers and clinicians describe their approaches in such illuminating detail.
The behavioral approaches section opens with a richly detailed chapter by Baucom, Epstein and colleges discussing Cognitive Behavioral Couple Therapy. I particularly enjoyed the authors' discussion of the influence of social learning theory on this approach in addition to the attention paid to macro-level interactional transactions. The Humanistic-Existential Approaches subsection is crowned by a wonderful chapter by Dr. Susan Johnson describing Emotionally Focused Couple therapy. Her description of EFT as an open discussion between Carl Rogers, Ludwig von Bertalanffy and John Bowlby was well demonstrated in her chapter. Her cogent writing illustrating the deep influence of human attachment on the development and maintenance of marital distress forms the core of her approach. This chapter is followed by Dr's John and Julie Gottman describing their approach to couple therapy that is heavily steeped in the empirical data gathered over decades in Gottman's legendary observational laboratories. The other chapters in this section also do not disappoint and when read in succession one can see that these approaches although different in many ways, converge in some key areas, such as the emphasis on the formation of the therapeutic alliance and working with in-session enactments of problematic relational transactions.
Part II focuses on special applications and in this section one will find subsections organizing the chapters around rupture and repair of relational bonds, couple therapy and the treatment of psychiatric disorders, and couple therapy in the broader context. Every chapter in this section adds to and builds upon what has been written previously with very little redundancy; a quality that is difficult to find in large volumes with this many authors. I particularly enjoyed Dr's. Gordon, Baucom, Snyder and Dixon discuss their approach to the treatment of extramarital affairs. They present a very thoughtful rationale for understanding the process of recovery from affairs that is heavily informed by individual response to trauma (i.e. the emotional impact of the trauma, making meaning, and re-contextualizing the trauma). There is also an excellent chapter by Dr. Gottlieb and colleges on legal and ethical issues in couple therapy. It is a very comprehensive discussion of common ethical challenges and provides more than several common solutions, comparing and contrasting ways of responding to these challenges.
Overall, this book is well written but very dense. It is certainly not for the layman as the authors seem to be addressing both academics and clinicians who understand the importance of utilizing proven approaches that are backed by sound empirical data. The end product delivers an extremely comprehensive volume that is perfect for graduate students learning couple therapy as well as experienced clinicians looking for an "all-in-one" reference. For those who have previous editions, I think that there is enough new content in this book to take a second look at this edition.Clinical Handbook of Couple Therapy, Fourth Edition Overview

Motivational Interviewing, Second Edition: Preparing People for Change ReviewWhen do you use a Motivational Interviewing approach? Whenever there is ambivalence for change. How often does ambivalence for change occur? At almost any time people are considering some kind of change. In this 2nd edition of Motivational Interviewing, the authors are very clear that MI is not an approach that obviates the use of other therapy approaches, such as CBT, but is an approach that prepares people for change.
I have been a trainer in Motivational Interviewing since 1995 (see http://www.cathycoletraining.com) and am privileged to have received my training from the authors, Drs. Miller and Rollnick. The first edition, Motivational Interviewing, Preparing People to Change Addictive Behavior, provided information that has helped many professionals working in addictions a way to more effectively engage clients in the process of change. The 2nd edition is written so that professionals working with clients around any issues...mental health, health behavior, addictions, health promotion, life coaching...are able to apply the methods for exploring and resolving ambivalence for change.
The first three chapters of the book set the stage for understanding the nature of change and ambivalence for change so that the reader is more fully prepared to understand the value of fully understanding the client situation and eliciting desire, ability, reasons, need and committment for change from the client. This approach differs from the often tendency to understand the client's situation and then in a well meaning way, prescribe the needed steps for change. The strategies for interacting with clients via the use of open ended questions and the use of reflective responses is clearly discussed. Methods for eliciting change talk and responding to the concept of resistance are easily understood and examples are provided that will assist readers in considering how this approach will fit into their unique situations.
Of great value to me has been the expanded view of the concept of client resistance. From the MI approach, resistance is seen as occuring in context and is conceived of as dissonance...just a lack of harmony, or being on the same page together. When viewed in this way, it just signals the professional that another approach is needed. How to 'roll with resistance' is then illustrated very clearly.
This edition of Motivational Interviewing has expanded my ability to provide training. Even more importantly, the emphasis of this edition has underscored even more for me,that in my provision of psychotherapy, MI is not an approach to be pulled out for special occasions but is the treatment philosophy from which I approach all clients, despite the particular therapy modality utilized in the specific work.Motivational Interviewing, Second Edition: Preparing People for Change Overview

The Mindful Therapist: A Clinician's Guide to Mindsight and Neural Integration (Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology) ReviewAlthough the title is the Mindful Therapist, a clinicians' guide, (and it is a breakthrough book for psychotherapists) this book is also valuable for anyone who is interested in deepening their understanding of how our minds work and how we affect the minds (and brains) of other people.

Dan Siegel is a remarkable teacher and this book is another in his series of books explaining interpersonal neurobiology. He is a gifted writer, often poetic in his explanations and descriptions of fundamental mental processes. He successfully addresses a multitude of crucial topics from exploring the experience of self, to what it means to be in resonance with another person or with oneself.
He introduces the reader to the latest brain science research, explores the nature of mind and neural integration in our brains and increases our depth of understanding of mindfulness and empathy. He opens up new ways of making sense of our inner world (the conscious and the unconscious) and he creates a framework to view what we may have seen and known previously but now with a new depth of knowledge he creates an entirely new level of understanding.
In previous work he had described a valuable human capability: "mindsight". He characterized it as "a type of focused attention that allows us to see the workings of our own minds and allows us to reshape our inner experience, to increase our freedom, as well as to be fully open to another person's inner experience". In this book he goes further in showing the components and workings of this ability and how to increase our capacity to use this in our clinical work and in our lives.
He wrote this book to be read as if the reader and he were having a conversation (and it is). I had to laugh when at one point he expanded a concept explaining how the mind and brain process memory and I was just going over and over this in my mind trying to grasp the full meaning of what he was explaining.

My response at such frustration is usually to close the book and look for something to eat. His next sentence in the book was: "Yes, this appears difficult and you probably want to close the book now.... but you can comprehend this with a little more effort".And it is well worth the effort.
This is part of his gift as a teacher; to know where a student (reader) may be, and to then engage them in a way that takes them to a deeper and more complex level of understanding. He is a unique writer in this respect and was once referred to as the Mr. Wizard of our generation. (Mr. Wizard had a TV show (a million years ago) and he introduced the science of everyday life with wonder and excitement. Dan Siegel does this.
I do not mean to suggest that this is a dry scientific text. On the contrary, this is a uniquely rich, exciting, practical and readable book. Because of his writing style, this quickly becomes a rewarding and exciting conversation with Dan Siegel. It will stretch ones thinking by introducing new areas of scientific research and new ways of seeing the complexity of how our mind works and how the brain is continually evolving.

He introduces new ways of understanding "mental illness" (actually any thinking that is either rigid or chaotic). And like a great teacher, he establishes the potential roots of these problems, and in stages, expands our knowledge to fully conceptualize a new view. He then suggests how to integrate all this information into the practice of psychotherapy in order to help another person develop more fully.
This is a book that should to be close at hand. Just as having a good friend or colleague available to take a walk with and discuss and explore new ideas with, this book serves the function of opening the reader's mind to see things in a new light.
It is like a fine soup chock full of exciting and interesting flavors and thoughts. Some concepts you may think you have tasted previously but in his recipe he takes them to new levels of understanding, nuance and integration creating a synergy of flavors for a hungry mind.

Each chapter has a section that focuses directly on the more scientific information (Brain Matters) and another section with actual exercises for the reader to do (Mindsight Skills). This approach is quite useful because the concepts presented can be understood on both the intellectual cognitive level and the experiential subjective level as the book is read. In addition these exercises can be practical tools that can be used with clients.
His description and useful visual models of the dimensions of human experience are illuminating. The relationship between the mind and actual changes in neuronal structure explain why old patterns of behavior have a high probability of occurring again and again unless real neuronal change occurs.

He explains clearly and beautifully how our thoughts (often mindless preconceptions) and automatic actions (impulses) continue to effect and reinforce our own brain structure. And he reminds us how unfortunately this inevitably effects the mind and the neuronal wiring of the person we are interacting with.
Throughout the book he explains and suggests the importance of continually improving ones "mindsight" and how to creatively and intentionally develop this in oneself. He illustrates how this will have a direct effect on what can occur in psychotherapy as well as any relationship.
And Dr Siegel, neuroscientist, uses the L word without shame. In fact Dr Siegel clearly describes the importance of "love" neurologically. He separates the various types of love and shows that on a fundamental level of our neurobiology, "love " and empathy help develop our minds which affects neuronal growth and therefore actually shape our brains and the brains of those we interact with.

This book is valuable for therapists and to everyone who wants to maximize their own knowledge of themselves and to learn how to recognize and develop "mindsight" within themselves. Dan Siegel introduces cutting edge brain science and mindfulness practices and integrates all this information making it understandable and useful in the real world of being with ourselves and interacting with others.

Handbook of Diagnostic and Structured Interviewing ReviewIf you want to improve your diagnostic and assessment skills, this is one of the best investments you can make in a book. Rogers' books are always well-researched and this one is no exception. Don't rely on "clinical lore" to guide your assessment procedures (e.g., did you know that asking patients to explain the meaning of a proverb is an unreliable method to measure, even roughly, abstract reasoning ability?) You not only will learn which instruments are the most reliable and valid, Rogers will also guide your selection of instruments so that you use the instrument most appropriate for the patient population that you serve. Forensic psychologists and psychiatrists, you should also read this text to ensure that your assessment procedures will stand up under scrutiny, under Daubert criteria or otherwise.Handbook of Diagnostic and Structured Interviewing Overview
