Personality Disorders and Older Adults: Diagnosis, Assessment, and Treatment ReviewI read this book for an undergraduate course, and I was very pleasantly surprised by what an enjoyable read it was (as you don't generally expect that from a text book!). I found it to be very thoughtfully laid out - when one chapter would raise a question for me, I would find the answer to it in the following chapter. It presents complex concepts in such a manner that they are very easy to understand, which is always a bonus when it comes to textbooks.
My favorite aspect of the book is how extensively the topic is covered. As a psychology student, I find that other text books talk a lot about mental disorders, but do not touch on issues of diagnosis or treatment. This book does that quite well. The chapters that talk about the disorders in detail also provide case studies for each disorder - I found these to be quite helpful, making the rather stiff, cut and dry diagnostic criteria of the DSM much easier to understand and recognize.

The Person: An Introduction to the Science of Personality Psychology ReviewPersonality psychology is a unique subject dealing with individual differences in people, and this book does a superb job of addressing this topic. What I like most about this book is that it covers all the important and renowned theories in this field, such as Costa and McCrae's Big Five traits, Freud's idea of defense mechanisms, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, Bandura's observational learning, Erikson's stages of psychosocial development and Bowlby's attachment styles among others.
These concepts may be seemingly diverse and unrelated, but McAdams manages to integrate them very well using his idea of three different levels of personality: forming an outline with traits, knowing some of the person's details through motivational, cognitive and developmental concerns and finally constructing an individual's life stories. All the concepts fit marvellously well within this framework.
In addition to the clear and concise writing, interesting and revelant narratives, anecdotes and examples are included. Moreover, within each chapter and at the end of each chapter, the important ideas and concepts are re-iterated and summarized.
Indeed, this book leaves the reader much more enriched and knowledgeable about ourselves and the people in our lives.The Person: An Introduction to the Science of Personality Psychology Overview

Dr. Millon then presents a rational, integrated theory of personality that is the foundation of his integrated biopsychosocial approach to personality. The rest of the book is dedicated to a detailed examination of the DSM-IV personality disorders. This single book can serve as a primary text for any advanced course in personality. Personality Disorders in Modern Life ReviewAs an "advanced layman" interested in personality, I can fully endorse all that has been said by others about this book. It's not often that you find a book intended as a textbook that's....hard to put down, but this book certainly qualifies.
One rather missleading aspect of the title is its' implication that the book is only about the more pathological aspects of personality, and although the book is indeed organized along the lines of the DSM defined personality disorders, Millon makes an ongoing point within every section that the severity of each of the disorders exists along a continum, ranging from "normal" to "extream".

Those within the "normal" range on each disorder illustrate aspects of personality that are common to almost every one of us, and as such, the book provides equally comprehensive insights into normal aspects of personality as well.
If you are truely interested in personality in it's full range of variation, I would not allow yourself to be detered by the books' price. Millon is a stunning intelect, and I believe you will come away from this quite readable volume with the same enthusiastic response as others who have reviewed it.

The Handbook of Narcissism and Narcissistic Personality Disorder: Theoretical Approaches, Empirical Findings, and Treatments ReviewInterest in narcissism has never been greater. Now, finally, we have a book that summarizes what we know on the topic, with an extremely comprehensive collection of 43 (!) chapters across all perspectives, from clinical to personality research to neuroscience. This book would be a fantastic choice for an advanced undergraduate seminar or a graduate class. It's both very rigorous and very thought-provoking, and is sure to lead to lots of discussion. It's a must-have for libraries, both university and public, as it brings together so much of the research in one book. Anyone doing research on narcissism or thinking about it should read this handbook -- it will save you enormous amounts of time in writing your introduction and seeing what research has already been done.
This book would also be an excellent choice for a lay reader who wants to understand more about narcissism and Narcissistic Personality Disorder. There's so much misinformation online and elsewhere, but this book is the definitive review of the research and theory and is very informative.
The chapters are also very readable, with lots of examples and an accessible style. The chapters are also fairly short, which also makes them easier to read and comprehend. It's still an academic book, with lots of references and research, but that's its strength as well -- you know you are getting information from the real experts on this topic. Psychoanalytic Case Formulation ReviewNancy Mc Williams is imminently readable. She has the gift of de-mystifying difficult concepts; or, put another way, she does not apparently have ego-needs that compel her to make the concepts of psychotherapy, or the field itself, obtuse. She also has quite an ability to cut-to-the-chase. Consider, for example, her description of "insight": "Part of the emphasis on understanding is that the two of them [patient and therapist] need something to talk about while the nonspecific relational factors are doing their quiet healing." Her personality shows through in her writing, so you will learn at two levels -- what she is telling you explicity,which is invaluable, and what she is telling you implicitly -- what it is about her that makes her so effective -- and believe me, you would want her to be your therapist, supervisor, whatever. As an aside, she seems to have a particular interest in, and gift for working with, addicts and sociopaths. Read the book, make charts, keep it at hand. Not giving it five stars probably seems even odder, but let me explain. This book is all about why brands need to have a personality. It is about avoiding being faceless and finding a way to add more authenticity into marketing.
Reading a book description written by a publisher is a faceless way to describe a book. I wanted to give you more than that. For a more real inside look, you can see the "making of PNI" section on the official book website - at the full name of the book (Personality Not Included), followed by dot com. There you can see photos, illustrations, original manuscript copies and lots of other material that will give you an idea of what the book took to write - as well as download the full introduction to get a sense of what the book is about.
Of course, I'd love if you buy the book here. More importantly, you'll find all my contact information on that site because I really want to hear what you thought about it. Psychoanalytic Diagnosis, Second Edition: Understanding Personality Structure in the Clinical Process ReviewThis review is mainly from having used the first edition, but I have looked through the second as well.
If I had to choose one book that had the biggest influence on my training, it would be McWilliams' Psychoanalytic Diagnosis.
The book neatly, concisely and coherently describes the theoretical underpinnings of the major schools of psychoanalysis. I haven't seen it described as well anywhere else. Those chapters alone are worth the cost of the book. The other valuable part of the book is the descriptions of the major personality pathologies, their origins as well as common transference and countertransference encountered with each. Again, this is invaluable as in most residencies and training programs, these areas are not covered in any great depth. The writing is clear, with case illustrations.

Attachment Theory and Close Relationships ReviewIn order to enjoy this book it is important to understand what attachment style is. The book describes Bowlby's (1969/1982) working model framework. Bowlby's (1969/1982) theory concluded that there are tendencies that are part of an attachment system, that functions to regulate the type and amount of contact between infants and their primary attachment figures. According to Bowlby, this system not only covers the infant's biological needs but their emotional needs as well. His theory states that if the proper contact is made between the caregiver and the infant, the infant will have a more successful transition into adulthood. Bowlby hypothesized that infants first use the attachment figure as a sort of proximity maintenance. This suggests that infants enjoy the presence of the caregiver and protest any separations from him or her. Secondly Bowlby thought the caregiver served as a safe haven for the infant, such that the infant would seek the parent for reassurance and safety. Finally, it was Bowlby's conclusion that the child used the caregiver as a secure base from which he or she could explore the environment. If the child did not find the parent as a secure base, he or she may have problems developing and maintaining relationships. Many studies have used this idea and built off of it for adult relationships such as Bartholomew and Ainsworth. Using many current respectable studies. The book is very detailed and easy to follow. In a very thorough and systematic way, Nancy McWilliams provides the reader with insights on several forms of character pathology - and does so from each of the four major schools of analytic thought (classical drive, ego, object relational, and self psychological perspectives). Typical countertransferential pulls and helpful guidelines for the conduct of therapy with each of the character types is also included.
