Disorders of Personality: DSM-IV and Beyond, 2nd Edition ReviewThere are few books in psychology that are as comprehensive in scope and detail as Dr. Millon's book. The book provides a solid, integrative theory of personalityand personality disorders that can be used not only in research, but also clinical practice by psychologists from any theoretical orientation. Because it is so comprehensive, the book is especially useful for students. The first section of the book (approximately 200 pgs.) is dedicated to laying down a foundation for the study of personality disorders -- the issues that it entails and a concise (yet, detailed) review of various personality theories. Dr. Millon then presents a rational, integrated theory of personality that is the foundation of his integrated biopsychosocial approach to personality. The rest of the book is dedicated to a detailed examination of the DSM-IV personality disorders. This single book can serve as a primary text for any advanced course in personality. No sitting with a dictionary to try and read a textbook. The layout of the book was wonderful as well as the descriptive manner it was written in, the pictures that accentuated the points delivered by the text. Adult Psychopathology and Diagnosis ReviewThis text did not work well for our graduate level course. There was far too much emphasis on tedious details concerning prevalence, specifiers, and the kinds of facts one seeks from an encyclopedia. What most chapters lacked was a more conceptual, model- or theory-driven examination of the factors involved in the onset, development, and maintenance of the disorders. To my mind these are far more useful and valuable issues to focus on in a graduate psychopathology course, yet the bulk of the text was filled with far less relevant material. In fact it appears that nearly half the pages comprised references rather than text, so despite the bulk of the book there is not nearly enough useful material between the covers.Adult Psychopathology and Diagnosis Overview

In a very thorough and systematic way, Nancy McWilliams provides the reader with insights on several forms of character pathology - and does so from each of the four major schools of analytic thought (classical drive, ego, object relational, and self psychological perspectives). Typical countertransferential pulls and helpful guidelines for the conduct of therapy with each of the character types is also included.
