Transforming the Legacy: Couple Therapy with Survivors of Childhood Trauma ReviewBasham and Miehls have shaped a book quite unlike any other in the social work literature. Transforming the Legacy may help transform our understanding of trauma in terms of its biology, psychology, and social aspects. Painstaking research has gone in the preparation for this writing; the book includes a wealth of fascinating narrative and therapeutic data. It is a research treasure to return to again and again, especially in light of the war in Iraq and the trauma derived therefrom whether by soldiers or the people. The tsunami catastrophe and its aftermath also should draw readers to this work.Transforming the Legacy: Couple Therapy with Survivors of Childhood Trauma Overview

Learning and Teaching Therapy ReviewThis has to be one of the best, most interesting and useful books on family therapy I have read. Almost every page has examples of interesting history, linked with practical suggestions for innovative practise reflection subtly intertwined with humour. Hayley writes with warmth and humility which develops in the reader the feeling that he is writing to them personally. From the preface, in which Hayley uses a car-driving analogy to explain very clearly why family therapy must be practised to be learned - to the conclusion, in which he explains why incompetent supervisors should be cared for and supported, Hayley writes from the heart. He succinctly and cleverly underlines this vibrant life in his writing with a professionalism which serves to reinforce that not only is family therapy an exciting and challenging skill which can be learned, it is an art and has components of existentialism and spiritualism which cannot be denied. I would heartily recommend this book to any practising therapist, new or experienced. The "new" bods will learn so much with every page read, and the experienced will see many of their "oldest friends" - clients, therapists and supervisors!Learning and Teaching Therapy Overview

Psychoanalytic Case Formulation ReviewNancy Mc Williams is imminently readable. She has the gift of de-mystifying difficult concepts; or, put another way, she does not apparently have ego-needs that compel her to make the concepts of psychotherapy, or the field itself, obtuse. She also has quite an ability to cut-to-the-chase. Consider, for example, her description of "insight": "Part of the emphasis on understanding is that the two of them [patient and therapist] need something to talk about while the nonspecific relational factors are doing their quiet healing." Her personality shows through in her writing, so you will learn at two levels -- what she is telling you explicity, which is invaluable, and what she is telling you implicitly -- what it is about her that makes her so effective -- and believe me, you would want her to be your therapist, supervisor, whatever. As an aside, she seems to have a particular interest in, and gift for working with, addicts and sociopaths. Read the book, make charts, keep it at hand. It's a good read.Psychoanalytic Case Formulation Overview

Psychoanalytic Diagnosis: Understanding Personality Structure in the Clinical Process ReviewPsychoanalytic Diagnosis is one of my favorite books. In a very thorough and systematic way, Nancy McWilliams provides the reader with insights on several forms of character pathology - and does so from each of the four major schools of analytic thought (classical drive, ego, object relational, and self psychological perspectives). Typical countertransferential pulls and helpful guidelines for the conduct of therapy with each of the character types is also included. This is a great book, and I return to it often in my own clinical work.Psychoanalytic Diagnosis: Understanding Personality Structure in the Clinical Process Overview
