Life Entrepreneurs: Ordinary People Creating Extraordinary Lives (J-B Warren Bennis Series) ReviewI bought this book based on all of the great reviews. Overall, I found it to be somewhat bland and uninspiring. While there were plenty of great stories of individuals making great accomplishments in the midst of adversity and faced with tough choices, the way the book was written took the energy out of it.
There were dozens and dozens of famous quotes, sometimes several per chapter. On top of the famous quotes, there were several excerpts from other books and authors peppered heavily throughout each chapter. Sometimes it just felt the authors were too lazy to express ideas in their own words so they just borrowed them from other authors. There are a lot of exercises included that are supposed to help you dig deeper inside of yourself to find your true purpose and your core identity. The exercises were probably the most useful part of the book, but not enough to make the rest of the book seem interesting.
All in all, I did not find anything new or profound in the book. Just a bunch of life stories chopped up and stirred into a text full of famous quotes, excerpts from other books, with a little writing that ties it all together in a somewhat bland manner.Life Entrepreneurs: Ordinary People Creating Extraordinary Lives (J-B Warren Bennis Series) Overview

Personality Not Included: Why Companies Lose Their Authenticity And How Great Brands Get it Back, Foreword by Guy Kawasaki ReviewAs you probably noticed, I'm the author of this book - so coming here and adding a review for my own book might seem like an odd thing to do. Not giving it five stars probably seems even odder, but let me explain. This book is all about why brands need to have a personality. It is about avoiding being faceless and finding a way to add more authenticity into marketing.
Reading a book description written by a publisher is a faceless way to describe a book. I wanted to give you more than that. For a more real inside look, you can see the "making of PNI" section on the official book website - at the full name of the book (Personality Not Included), followed by dot com. There you can see photos, illustrations, original manuscript copies and lots of other material that will give you an idea of what the book took to write - as well as download the full introduction to get a sense of what the book is about.
Of course, I'd love if you buy the book here. More importantly, you'll find all my contact information on that site because I really want to hear what you thought about it. And to answer the question about why only 4 stars ... it's because I think the book is pretty good, but whether or not it deserves the top rating is really up to you.Personality Not Included: Why Companies Lose Their Authenticity And How Great Brands Get it Back, Foreword by Guy Kawasaki Overview

The Big Book of Small Business: You Don't Have to Run Your Business by the Seat of Your Pants ReviewAs a new small business owner, I've devoured several books written on the topic of starting a business. Most have a few good kernels of knowledge in them somewhere, but none are as consistently helpful as this book.
The author, Tom Gegax, has a great deal of personal experience starting and growing companies, most of which seem to be in the tire industry. If you're business is not merchandise-based, but service-based, this book is still very pertinent. Topics like vision and values are discussed, as well as some interesting marketing ideas. Adapting the information into a business plan for a Web company was easy and enjoyable.
Be prepared for Mr. Gegax's very zealous approach to business. It borders on fanatical at times. If you shy away from corporate structures due to their "you must believe" mindset, you'll flinch a few times while reading, but it's still excellent counsel.
From a tactile standpoint, this book is great. The binding is well constructed, and the print is slightly large and easy to read.
I cannot recommend this book enough if you're starting your own business. Double that recommendation if you own your own business and need a shot of inspiration.
I also recommend Joe Kennedy's Small Business Owner's Manual available on Amazon. The Big Book of Small Business: You Don't Have to Run Your Business by the Seat of Your Pants Overview

Double Double: How to Double Your Revenue and Profit in 3 Years or Less ReviewWOW! Hard to believe I'm the only one who didn't give this book 5 stars.
The book is not a How To ... like the subtitle suggests. It does have some useful ideas about various aspects of business (vision, communication, hiring, metrics), though none of them are ground breaking. But what disappointed was the lack of a coherent process as the title indicated. His only process is to create a vision for where your company should be in 3 years then start working on all these other aspects - but he doesn't give any way to prioritize or structure the process. I suspect he does this better in his one-on-one consulting which this book seems designed to promote.
In addition, most of the advice seems to be geared toward small companies - ie those without an HR person - despite his stories of coaching at very large companies.
The marketing and PR sections also seem slanted toward consumer oriented companies rather than B2B.
He relies heavily on his experience with 1-800-GOTJUNK and College Pro Painters. The latter company is not that well regarded in my experience and I thought the former company was until I read a piece in this book where revenue fell because they ran out of franchises to sell. It occurs to me that a franchise company that makes most of it's money from selling franchises rather than the royalty of selling products or services is probably asking to be a flash in the pan. Good thing Herold got out when he did.
You'll probably get some good ideas reading this book - but if you read a lot of business books you'll have seen many (maybe all) of the ideas in other places. Just don't expect it to be a step by step recipe.Double Double: How to Double Your Revenue and Profit in 3 Years or Less Overview
