Be Unreasonable: The Unconventional Way to Extraordinary Business Results ReviewI just devoured Paul Lemberg's Be Unreasonable: The Unconventional Way to Extraordinary Business Results. I read Lemberg's Faster Than the Speed of Change last year and loved it, so I've had this one on pre-order for weeks.
I find that most business books can be condensed into 4-8 pages, perfect for Soundview summaries. Not this one. This book - written as six main chapters broken into many short sections, has gold on almost every page.
Much of this is (un-) common sense, but there is much that is surprising, often delighting. There's a whole theme about spending money to make money, a great bit on how to use sacrifice to your advantage, a chapter on pricing, especially raising prices, and my favorite section - The Art of Unreasonable Requests. I started using this immediately and I'm already having people say "yes" to things that I couldn't have gotten yesterday. Lemberg calls it "More Cycles and Bigger Bites."
In keeping with Be Unreasonable's thinking about ROI: I've already earned back way more than the cost of my time invested in this one.
Great read, great ideas, great book! And very, very actionable. I like that.

Media Training 101: A Guide to Meeting the Press ReviewThis book gives you the essentials about dealing with the media, starting with interviews and calls from reporters. Sally Stewart, former journalist and PR practitioner, delivers the nitty-gritty. Her advice to recognize reporters' financial and emotional pressures is particularly useful. Reporters have two clear priorities, she says, to write good stories and to go home. If you want their good will, try a little respect, she suggests, although she displays considerable cynicism and negativity about them. Her lessons include getting reporters to pay attention and which reporters to contact and how, be it by phone, e-mail or fax. Stewart tells you how to deal with unexpected calls from the press, and how to decide whether or not you want to be part of a story. If you do, here's how to make the most of it. And if you don't, this book tells you how to extricate yourself, if possible. Along the way Stewart explains how to dress for a television appearance. If this paragraph mentions any core skill you don't already have, we have a newsflash for you: get the book.Media Training 101: A Guide to Meeting the Press Overview

The Power of Small: Why Little Things Make All the Difference ReviewTHE POWER OF SMALL reminded me a lot of John Miller's QBQ series. I haven't read the previous book, THE POWER OF NICE, but I would imagine the message is much the same. All in all, Thaler and Koval are sending the message that just one small action in your life can have momentous or serendipitous consequences. By taking a moment to thank someone for a job interview, you could be setting yourself up to be chosen over a more qualified candidate. Or by escorting an old man to a room he's looking for, you could be escorting your boss's boss and thereby leaving a (favorable) memorable impression.
The point of the book is this: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. It's the Golden Rule. Everyone knows it but not many actually follow it. Follow it and you will be rewarded in spades. The Power of Small: Why Little Things Make All the Difference Overview

Keeping The Millennials: Why Companies Are Losing Billions in Turnover to This Generation- and What to Do About It ReviewMy first reaction when I first got the book was to reject it. I thought "in this turbulence who would need to worry about recruiting and keeping staff." I thought "poor timing to release a book like this".
I also tend to dislike books the categorize people and say all millennials do this or that. I know I am not typical of any group and I think most people are also unique.
But then I got into the book.
I agree that turnover is very expensive for companies. This is often an overlooked expense.
I am also a believer that the key to running a successful business is getting people fully engaged so understanding what creates engagement in a generation (and no they are not all the same) is important.
I also see that the current economy will create a situation where some people will work later in their life so we will now have 4 generations that need to work smoothly together.
And I am energized to think of using the unique characteristics that each generation can offer to build a great company. This diversity will be health if properly harnessed.
Millennials (or generation Y) are an interesting generation (born 1980 to 1999). They suffer from overprotective parents and having things too easy (read The Millionaire Next Door for a prospective on that). They are highly techno savvy. They will embrace multiple jobs and careers in their lifetime. They seek balance in life. They want fast advancement.
I liked the section that compared the Boomers (that would be me) to the Millennials. Even though I reject being categorized, I certainly saw myself with many Boomer qualities. Boomer focus on work ethic and Millennials focus on getting the job done - perhaps I can learn something. Work less, accomplish more. After all, effectiveness is really the goal.
I really liked the section on how to onboard millennials and how they learn. These were good concrete ideas that are actionable.
And of course I liked the view on how Millennials use and interact with technology and the Internet.
Good book. Interesting and well written.Keeping The Millennials: Why Companies Are Losing Billions in Turnover to This Generation- and What to Do About It Overview

The Big Book of Small Business: You Don't Have to Run Your Business by the Seat of Your Pants ReviewAs a new small business owner, I've devoured several books written on the topic of starting a business. Most have a few good kernels of knowledge in them somewhere, but none are as consistently helpful as this book.
The author, Tom Gegax, has a great deal of personal experience starting and growing companies, most of which seem to be in the tire industry. If you're business is not merchandise-based, but service-based, this book is still very pertinent. Topics like vision and values are discussed, as well as some interesting marketing ideas. Adapting the information into a business plan for a Web company was easy and enjoyable.
Be prepared for Mr. Gegax's very zealous approach to business. It borders on fanatical at times. If you shy away from corporate structures due to their "you must believe" mindset, you'll flinch a few times while reading, but it's still excellent counsel.
From a tactile standpoint, this book is great. The binding is well constructed, and the print is slightly large and easy to read.
I cannot recommend this book enough if you're starting your own business. Double that recommendation if you own your own business and need a shot of inspiration.
I also recommend Joe Kennedy's Small Business Owner's Manual available on Amazon. The Big Book of Small Business: You Don't Have to Run Your Business by the Seat of Your Pants Overview

People Buy You: The Real Secret to what Matters Most in Business ReviewJeb Blount's podcasts (Sales Guy Podcast) and web community (SalesGravy) have created high anticipation for his new book, and Blount does not disappoint.
Blount begins by noting that competition, technology and a focus on sales processes have created a dilution of personal interactions. Blount insists it is the salesperson, not technology or process, who sells. To remedy this lack of personal interactions, Blount offers this simple formula:
Likeability leads to making authentic connections...
Authentic connections lead to customers sharing real problems...
Solving customer's problems builds trust and creates positive emotional experiences, and the cycle begins again.
Two months ago, the author proved for me that his formula works. After hearing one of his podcasts, I sent a brief email to Jeb's website and asked him a question. I had never met Blount, and did not really expect a response. Within the hour, Blount sent me a detailed answer.
Jeb's podcast made him seem likeable, and I felt connected enough to ask his opinion for my business problem. He immediately offered a solution, creating a positive experience from me. When his book came out, I promptly bought a copy. My experience with Jeb proves that his formula is absolutely correct. It also shows that Jeb practices what he preaches.People Buy You: The Real Secret to what Matters Most in Business Overview
