Creative New Employee Orientation Programs: Best Practices, Creative Ideas, and Activities for Energizing Your Orientation Program ReviewThis is a compendium of almost everything that one might need to create or improve existing orientation programs. From best practices in orientation videos, small businesses, intern & buddy programs to case studies from companies like Ford and Alcatel.
The book also includes numerous useful lists, tools and aids that can be reproduced or used as a basic template for planning new orientation as well as evaluating and improving existent programs. In other words, this is a practical book filled with implementable ideas and suggestions guaranteed to make your new hires feel 'special' and at the same time, taking them through all the knowledge and information bits that they need to learn in a fun and engaging manner.
I found the case studies chapters very informative and particularly enjoyed Part 5 of the book: Orientation Games & Activities which includes 18 very useful and effective games like the hunt for company policies which turns a normally boring part of any orientation program into a really fun activity.
Also quite useful was the Part 6: Orientation Checklists & Surveys covering such areas as 'Before the Employee's First Day'; 'I'm New Here - What Should I Learn?'; and 'A 90-day New Employee Survey'.Creative New Employee Orientation Programs: Best Practices, Creative Ideas, and Activities for Energizing Your Orientation Program Overview

Strategic Human Resources: Frameworks for General Managers ReviewEssential reading for both general managers and human resource executives, this book breaks new ground in several ways.
First, the authors present human resources as a critical part of a SYSTEM, integrated with the company's external environment, workforce, culture, strategy and production methods, rather than as an isolated or downstream activity.
Second, they bring insights from economics, sociology and social psychology to the topic, in a powerful way. The four appendices alone (transaction cost economics, game theory, agency theory and market signaling) are worth the price of the book.
Third, they avoid the trap of "best practice", where an author looks at a few successful firms (GE? PepsiCo? 3M?) and encourages others to imitate them. In contrast, this book offers clues to creating real and inimitable competitive advantage from a company's human resource management.
The entire treatment is readable and rich in cases.Strategic Human Resources: Frameworks for General Managers Overview

Agile Career Development: Lessons and Approaches from IBM ReviewReview of "Agile Career Development - Lessons and Approaches from IBM"
IBM has developed a career development model for all employers...large, mid-size, and small....to follow in order to have the tools and "...agility to quickly and effectively change the way decisions are made..."
Let's be honest, the business world as we know it is changing. The workforce began its evolution with the addition of Gen Xers into key positions and management roles and continues with Gen Y and the mass departures of the Baby Boomers. Areas of the employee/employer relationship need to be revamped in order to have the people strength to move business forward and to ensure profitability.
One of these areas is career development and the move away from traditional plans and systems that are followed blindly but do not provide results. Traditional approaches to performance management, compensation planning, and career development are no longer adequate. Traditional career development tools are disconnected and their value to the employee is not clear. A career development program that truly supports business strategy and business outcomes is the IBM model in "Agile Career Development."
The ability of employees is directly related to organizational alignment and accomplishment of organizational goals. Business processes will succeed only if adequately skilled and motivated employees, supplied with accurate and timely information, are driving them. This is the premise in "Agile Career Development."IBM used internal surveys, exit surveys, and their "World Jam" to elicit information from employees. In other words, IBM listened to its employees. IBM redefined the roles of employees and managers and focused on "engagement" that played a key role in supporting the new agile career development tools. They were then able to realize the results of an expert workforce as key to growth and innovation. This is a model that will work for all employers. The book makes reference to the global workforce and the globalization of work but the model set out in "Agile Career Development" will also move non-global companies towards success and positive business outcomes.

Handbook of Human Performance Technology: Improving Individual and Organizational Performance Worldwide ReviewWe humans are most important. Not only to ourselves, but increasingly to economy. More and more humans become alive within the business they work in. And businesses become more and more knowledge critical, which enhances the importance of humans and their performance. This means that addressing issues on human performance becomes increasingly complex and daunting. Hence: Human Performance Technology. This handbook is both scientific and realistic. It takes the need for metrics as much into account as the 'softer' aspects. It approaches HP from a General Systems Theory approach and does is coherent. Everyone that wants to know where we stand, where we are going, will love it for its scientific and academic value alone. But those who want to put HPT in practice at strategical, tactical and/or oprational level will both love and need it. Re-Engage: How America's Best Places to Work Inspire Extra Effort in Extraordinary Times ReviewHave you ever wondered what employees think about their companies when they really want to work there vs. when they really do not want to work there? If you could unzip the minds of thousands of employees and understand how they see their companies, think what you could learn about your own organization.
"Re-Engage" gives you a front row seat to millions of interviews by employees of 10,000 companies as they completed the "Best Place to Work" survey. Leigh and Mark have analyzed the entire range of survey responses and have found key insights that differentiate the best places to work from all the rest. Put these insights to work in your organization.
Here are a few of key drivers of employee engagement highlighted in the book:
- Trust level in senior leadership
- Coaching and feedback provided by managers
- Being recognized and valued for one's contributions
- Having opportunities to learn and grow on the job
"Re-engage" presents a model of six universal drivers of employee engagement that come directly from the survey data. But more importantly, each driver is illustrated by many verbatim quotes and comments as well as the highest scoring company for each driver - who the company is, what they do and how they have optimized employee engagement.
There are many leading practices, approaches and methods described throughout that offer tremendous potential if they were to be leveraged in your company. If you want to reduce the number of habitual underperformers, chronic complainers or professional victims, and increase the percentage of high performers, you will want to take advantage of Leigh's and Mark's recommendations.
I think one of the most critical chapters is the one on building effective teams. Since so much of our work today is done by multi-function or multi-geographic teams, companies can no longer afford to have teams who do not execute well. Customer satisfaction, productivity and quality depend on what these teams deliver. This chapter describes how to set up the conditions for effective teamwork and can provide a road map for you to use in your own organization.
Companies all over the world are faced with unprecedented levels of change in today's business environment. The demand for leaders at all levels who can guide engaged teams to meet their marketplace challenges far outstrips the supply. "Re-Engage" provides new insights and real world guidelines that can help you meet your organization's challenges today.Re-Engage: How America's Best Places to Work Inspire Extra Effort in Extraordinary Times Overview

Managing the Global Workforce (Global Dimensions of Business) ReviewCaligiuri, Lepak and Bonache provide a comprehensive and useful framework for HR and business leaders operating in global business structures. The book demonstrates that organizations that implement global strategies with "cultural agility" and local insight can have a positive impact on company performance and minimize risk and failure. The book facilitates analysis of company strategy in the design and implementation of HR strategy by encouraging reflection of the impact of local realities on talent acquisition, cultural integration, competency development and other critical dimensions of HR. HR professionals at all levels working in organizations with international expansion as a strategic imperative could benefit from Caligiuri, Lepak and Bonache's guide on how to coach organizational leaders to make sound decisions on HR strategy.

Army of Entrepreneurs: Create an Engaged and Empowered Workforce for Exceptional Business Growth Review
The title of my review refers to what I believe is Jennifer Prosek's key point in this book: To paraphrase, Think like a gardener and decide what you want to grow, when and where to plant it, prepare the soil, plant, and then nourish the soil and protect the garden. In the business world, the gardeners are supervisors and what they must grow is what Prosek describes as an Army of Entrepreneurs (AOE), high-potential leaders with an entrepreneurial temperament and worldview. Prosek offers what many of these supervisors need to develop that potential: "An easy-to-follow, replicable [key word] plan of action that can be instituted [two more key words] quickly and inexpensively."
Organizations reflect those who lead them and that is especially true of the largest organizations, such as General Electric. Consider what Jack Welch said years ago at one of the company's annual meetings. He responded to a question: Why do you admire entrepreneurial companies so much that you want GE to become more like one?
"For one, they communicate better. Without the din and prattle of bureaucracy, people listen as well as talk; and since there are fewer of them they generally know and understand each other. Second, small companies move faster. They know the penalties for hesitation in the marketplace. Third, in small companies, with fewer layers and less camouflage, the leaders show up very clearly on the screen. Their performance and its impact are clear to everyone. And, finally, smaller companies waste less. They spend less time in endless reviews and approvals and politics and paper drills. They have fewer people; therefore they can only do the important things. Their people are free to direct their energy and attention toward the marketplace rather than fighting bureaucracy."
In addition to the aforementioned "game plan," Prosek also offers anecdotes and case studies that illustrate the AOE model in real-world circumstances as well as statistics, research, and commentary from various experts in the business community. Years ago, Thomas Edison observed, "Vision without execution is hallucination." That is why Prosek places such great emphasis on explaining or at least suggesting how to create, lead, deploy, and support an AOE. At the conclusion of each of 12 chapters, she inserts a "Six Steps Forward" section that lists what to do right after reading the material in the given chapter.
In Chapter 3, she shares her own thoughts about why big companies need entrepreneurs (i.e. to support innovation, keep in touch with customers, retain the most valued workers, move faster, and expand globally) and then recommends seven specific strategies for larger organizations (Pages 35-42). The case studies include those of Edward Jones, Emerson Electric, Ernst & Young, IBM, and Intuit. Again, the focus is on what works, what doesn't, and why. Other material within her narrative that caught my eye include "boot camp" (Pages 59-60), conducting training "workshops" (Hunting for Business, Advanced Hunting, Intrapreneurship, Planning and Organizing, and Teaching the Business), creating a talent pipeline (six steps, Pages 83-85), measuring success (formal and informal, Pages 113-129), managing disaster (Pages 172 and 189-190), and "Ten Questions to Ponder" in Appendix A (Pages 191-192).
Throughout her lively and eloquent narrative, Jennifer Prosek skillfully invokes a variety of military metaphors as she explains how to create "an engaged and empowered workforce for exceptional business growth." She rigorously covers each step of the process: recruiting, hiring, orientation, training, deployment, and performance measurement. There is no shortage of metaphors to call upon when describing this difficult but nonetheless essential process. I congratulate her on this brilliant achievement.
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Brian Carney and Isaac Getz's Freedom, Inc.: Free Your Employees and Let Them Lead Your Business to Higher Productivity, Profits and Growth, Erika Andersen's Growing Great Employees, Dean Spitzer's Transforming Performance Measurement and Enterprise Architecture as Strategy co-authored by Jeanne W. The Real Value of Training: Measuring and Analyzing Business Outcomes and the Quality of ROI ReviewIn today's competitive global economy, internal and client-based training takes on an even greater emphasis. Most companies advertise the desire to find employees who hit the ground running; however, perpetual training has become a new business reality. But how do you measure its efficacy? In his latest book, Ron Drew Stone will teach you how to implement, measure and analyze your training strategy.
"The real truth about the performance results is often concealed and even inflated by ROI (return on investment) calculations. This is strikingly similar to the Titanic hitting the iceberg and continuing on its course as though things were okay." Ron Drew Stone, President of the Center for Performance and ROI, Inc.
Crisp Format and Enhanced Typography
There are 12 comprehensive chapters, a detailed table of contents and index, along with a very brief references section. I liked that the author and publisher decided to use a slightly larger typeface for the text and bold subheadings. The typographic format, along with the book's width, allows for fewer paragraphs per page for enhanced readability. The author's writing style is conversational and informative. He avoids the use of frequent acronyms and explains difficult concepts in clear language.
Charts, Tables and Graphs
The author makes liberal use of well-designed charts and graphics to reinforce his teachings. These items are spread throughout the book and are detailed without being confusing. The inside of the back cover advertises another valuable feature: Tools and templates discussed in the book will be freely available at the author's website: [...]
Valuable Case Studies
With the exception of the first two sections, each subsequent chapter has a detailed impact case study at the end. These analyses are actual company studies, with proprietary information changed, that provide a significant perspective. They also serve as a useful review to reinforce key points from each chapter. Most chapters also contain "Guiding Principles" of concise advice.
Notable Quotes
"Training professionals have two unique challenges. One challenge exists on the front side of training solutions, and the other resides on the back side."
"Learning is an important measure in establishing the chain of evidence for a follow-up performance evaluation."
"Questionnaires are generally the most efficient method of collecting data."
"Research has demonstrated that as much as 90 percent of what is learned is not applied to the job... If there is no transfer to the work setting, there is no learning."
"The current average (employee benefits) in the United States is 38 percent of salaries."
"Every audience has a bias, so be prepared for it."
After reading this comprehensive book, you will learn how to avoid corporate icebergs in the training analysis and measurement processes.

The ASTD Training and Development Handbook: A Guide to Human Resource Development ReviewThe Handbook is arranged to cover almost all aspects of Training & Development. The topics are carefully selected and their authors picked from among the top names in their respective fields and therefore, the chapters are focused, targeted and provide the right mix of information and practical guidelines.
Each chapter addresses a single topic (like corporate universities, customer service training, leadership development, etc.) and is written in a straight-forward manner at the right depth making them easy to read and the perfect introduction to the topic without losing it's functionality as a reference.
No T&D professional should go without this book whether as a reference and a quick source of information when memory will just not oblige or an informative and valuable resource for information and ideas.
The Handbook is divided into 5 Sections:
1) The Training & development Function - Covering such topics as the learning organization, history of training and cost accounting for training.
2) Program Design & Development - The chapters on ISD; HPT; Adult Learning; & Evaluation are brilliantly written. I keep on going back to them again and again.
3) Media & methods - Includes some good case studies as well as Thiagi's excellent chapter on instructional games.
4) Training Applications - This is a brilliant discussion of almost all training topics that you might come across.
5) Resources - While these might be a little dated, they are still quite useful.

Strategy-Driven Talent Management: A Leadership Imperative (J-B SIOP Professional Practice Series) ReviewStrategy-Driven Talent Management serves multiple purposes. It's an approachable introduction to the emerging field of talent management. It provides recommendations for implementing and evaluating specific talent management programs (e.g., high-potential talent management, succession management) based both on sound scientific research and the authors' practical experiences. And most of the chapters offer anecdotes and examples that elucidate the concepts and give the reader a starting point for creating their own tools. The writing is geared toward an audience with advanced knowledge of or experience in industrial-organizational psychology or human resources. There is an annotated bibliography at the back, which is a huge bonus for anyone wanting more detail on the research that is cited in each chapter. Creating a Culture of Competence ReviewThe book contains numerous bits and pieces of advice, insights, and analyses on how to handle personal competencies, a person乫s traits and characteristics that help the individual become successful at performing their jobs. It is particularly useful with the tools and guidelines derived from the author乫s experience in the field of human resource management, i.e. headhunting.
It fails to provide any integrated view of how these ideas can be leveraged to create an organizational competence. For example, there is a very brief discussion of whether competency assessment should be linked to compensation, with a general list of pros and cons, and the answer is, 乬it depends on the organisation.乭 To adequately deal with this issue, we need at least a minimum understanding of the value of a 乬culture of competence乭 against those of alternative corporate cultures that place less emphasis on personal competencies than on other factors such as management control, cooperation, and competition.
I recommend the book for those seeking a practical understanding of personal competency management, but not for those seeking to 乬create a culture of competence.乭 The book only partially delivers on its stated promise, but remains useful for the hands-on guidance it contains.Creating a Culture of Competence Overview

Effective Human Relations: Interpersonal and Organizational Applications ReviewI bought this book for a online college class, I got it shipped 2-day shipping and it got to me on time. I was worried it may be a different book as it was almost half the price as the university. But I am in week 3 of a quarter, and it is the same edition, just not as expensive. The book is an easy read, and it is better than the previous edition. I had the opportunity this summer to take the class with the older edition, but the new edition was smaller and I found easy to read. I would recommend this to any one who wants to learn more about human relations in the workplace. The HR Scorecard: Linking People, Strategy, and Performance ReviewAs a seasoned HR professional, I have spent the last decade looking for the "Holy Grail" of H.R. Metrics. My quest is not over after reading The HR Scorecard, but the book presented many helpful concepts and tools that we can use to measure the effectiveness of HR as a function, to measure R.O.I. on talent and talent initiatives, to measure the impact of HR on organizational performance, and as a basis for business case development of our deliverables.
Three well respected thought leaders in the HR field have conducted extensive research of more than 2500 companies to uncover a model for implementing HR strategy and measuring results. If fully employed HR will deliver results linked to higher functional and organizational performance.
To transform the structure of HR into a strategic function, HR leaders must:
1.Clearly define the business strategy.
2.Build a business case for HR as a strategic asset.
3.Create a strategy map (with leading and lagging indicators, and tangibles and intangibles.)
4.Identify HR Deliverables within the strategy map.
5.Align the HR architecture with HR deliverables.
6.Design the strategic measurement System.
7.Implement management by measurement.
The concepts in this book are useful but may not be practical for all HR leaders. This book is for organizations that have the resources to implement an in-depth system of measuring their HR performance. It is not a way to create a simple snapshot to be included in business reviews. While the authors suggest using no more than 25 measures so as not to create a burdensome systems, many of the examples in the book are quite complex and can by used only by the largest of organizations. It is also difficult to pick just a few efficiency measures and performance drivers from the comprehesive list prepared by the authors.
Real life examples of scorecards are shown from organizations such as Verizon/GTE, General Mills, and General Electric. While these examples can help any size HR department think through how to measure the performance of their function, I would like to see a smaller organization profiled with more simple measures.
This book should be in the library of all serious HR practitioners. It is well written, well researched, and well presented. If the tools and concepts are implemented, the HR function can rise to a new level. For those in smaller organizations, a few HR efficiency measures can be gleaned to build a simpler scorecard based on the key HR deliverables for the enterprise. The HR Scorecard: Linking People, Strategy, and Performance Overview

Fair, Square & Legal: Safe Hiring, Managing & Firing Practices to Keep You & Your Company Out of Court ReviewThis is the Fourth Edition of an exceptionally valuable book which was first published in 1991. Weiss has updated his material to accommodate new laws, regulations, and court decisions which are directly relevant to discrimination and EEOC guidelines, employee verification and security, technology issues, sexual harassment, negligent hiring practices, management of people with disabilities, affirmative action, discipline and termination policies and procedures, defamation, violations of privacy, the Family and Medical Leave Act, evaluations and promotions, sex and age discrimination, and labor law.

As is also true of previous editions, the subtitle correctly indicates that Weiss explains "safe hiring, managing & firing practices to keep you & your company out of court." He organizes the material as follows:

Part I Safe Hiring Practices [re recruiting, interviewing, and employment decisions]

Part II Safe Management Practices [re evaluations and promotions, preventing sex discrimination and sexual harassment on the job, employee action laws and labor rights]

Part III Safe Firing Practices [re discipline and firing practices, public policy, management of older employees]

With Weiss's guidance, it is possible for the decision-makers in any company to complete what amounts to a comprehensive "audit" of any and all areas in which that company could be vulnerable to litigation. Of at least equal importance, the same "audit" will help the company to determine precisely what its obligations are as an employer as well as what the legal rights of each employees are.

Perhaps it would be helpful to those who read this commentary if I now provide a brief excerpt which is representative of the quality of Weiss?s counsel throughout the entire book. I have deliberately selected an especially troublesome area, one which has been the focal point of countless lawsuits: Employee Performance Evaluation. According to Weiss: ?Subjective rating systems in themselves are not illegal. The EEOC and the courts recognize subjective job standards such as communication and leadership skills) and that the words [in italics] good, satisfactory, poor, and unsatisfactory [end italics] carry within them subjective elements. So where do they draw the line?

1. When standards are unequally applied or do not exist at all; and

2. When someone shows that the standards or their absence produces disparate treatment in promotion and compensation policies, as for example:

? When sex stereotyping tainted the process by which a woman was denied a partnership in a [major] accounting firm or

? When subjective decision making torpedoed promotion policies that have disparate impact on minorities.

EEOC and court rulings encourage objective performance appraisals, but they discourage using them as a subterfuge for discrimination.?

Weiss devotes all of Chapter 6 to explaining HOW to formulate policies and procedures so that all evaluations and promotions are ?safe.? That is, they are in full compliance with all applicable regulatory laws, rules, and regulations.

Throughout this brilliant book, as Weiss rigorously and thoroughly examines hiring, managing, and firing practices which are both ethical and legal, he explains What You Can Do and What You Cannot Do. However, with all due respect to Weiss, qualified legal counsel should be consulted to ensure that all of a company's policies and procedures are "fair, square & legal." One of the many value-added benefits of this updated edition is that Weiss identifies a number of ?Cases? at the end of each chapter to which his readers and their legal counsel are referred. There are 17 cited at the end of Chapter 6.

An organization?s policies and procedures concerning employment law must then be carefully explained to all of its employees as well as contained within an employee manual. If at all possible, the same policies and procedures should be readily available online. Of course, they must be rigorously and consistently enforced. Even so, there may yet be frivolous lawsuits but at least the company has done everything possible to prevent them and is thus much better prepared to obtain a favorable decision in a court of law if and when involved in litigation.Fair, Square & Legal: Safe Hiring, Managing & Firing Practices to Keep You & Your Company Out of Court Overview

Training on Trial: How Workplace Learning Must Reinvent Itself to Remain Relevant ReviewWhen Donald Kirkpatrick gave us the four levels of evaluation in the 1950's, he gave us a tool for evaluation for Human Performance Technology that endures to this day. Others have developed their own models, including Phillips's ROI, but they all build on the foundation that Kirkpatrick laid. Now, Don's son Jim and his wife Wendy have taken the Kirkpatrick model a step further. By creating the Business Partnership Model, all the best practices in HPT converge. Training on Trial makes the case for evaluation and the Partnership Model. The current economic climate makes this even more relevant as training departments struggle to prove their worth. This is an easy read because it makes so much sense and rings so true. It is an essential addition to my Kirkpatrick library.Training on Trial: How Workplace Learning Must Reinvent Itself to Remain Relevant Overview

Human Sigma: Managing the Employee-Customer Encounter Review
In this volume, John Fleming and Jim Asplund present and then examine with both rigor and eloquence what they characterize as "a new set of rules and a different way of thinking about managing [a] company's complex human systems, which we believe can serve as an antidote to Terminator Management. It's about a model and an approach that we call HumanSigma."
Many of those who read this brief commentary have seen the second Arnold Schwarzenegger film in which the Terminator acknowledges to John O'Connor (portrayed by Edward Furlong) that he has been programmed not to think. Fleming and Asplund suggest that is also true of a common management style, "an institutional mind-set that views people - customers and employees - as a necessary evil, a nuisance, or in extreme cases, as adversaries in doing business. Rather than viewing people as the reason a business exists, the Terminator School of Management views them as impediments to business that breed inefficiency, cost, and errors."
They offer HumanSigma as an alternative, indeed an antidote to that mind-set. They characterize it as a "map of the terrain" within which employee-customer encounters occur. They recommend five "new rules" that are best revealed within the narrative, in context. These rules have been validated by studies of 10 million customers and 10 million customers around the globe. They note that a recent Gallup study of 89 companies showed that the companies that built a critical mass of engaged employees grew earnings per share at 2.6 times the rate of low-engagement companies. Fleming and Asplund's conclude their book with the assertion that people who own their improvement makes them "more innovative, productive, and confident. Are there a better set of characteristics for companies facing an unknown future? We think not, and millions of employees and customers agree." As do I.
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Paul Spiegelman's Why Is Everyone Smiling? The Secret Behind Passion, Productivity, and Profit.Human Sigma: Managing the Employee-Customer Encounter Overview
