Everything I Know about Marketing I Learned From Google ReviewI'm a huge fan of Malcolm Gladwell's books... I think I'm most inspired by his easily approachable writing style that exposes and explores big concepts in easily understood, and easily digestible terms, all while making sure the reader cracks a smile or a laugh at every page-turn.
I'm thrilled to have found another writer with that exact same style: Aaron Goldman. Goldman's book is a must for every early student of marketing, but even old dogs will find more than just a few new tricks here. Goldman has brought insights about Google's user approach that any humble webmaster or humble CMO (there aren't that many actually) can immediately begin to put into practice to correct their own confusing jumble of HTML madness. As marketers we try so hard to make sure that our users see everything we're about immediately upon arrival at our site, but the array of starbursts, auto-initiated audio & video, rich media silliness, and javascript fireworks only serves to complicate our message and leave the user even more bewildered about our value than when they first arrived.
Goldman articulates a simple model (one that easily fits into a lobe and a half of your frontal cortex) that will help you rarify and clarify your message so that consumers will finally "get" you. If you've struggled to divine the right words to sound your internal rallying cry, this book's for you. If you return to your company's website day after day and constantly wonder how to better array the information that's there, this book's for you. If you need a book to give your stuck-in-the-dark-ages CEO, this book's for you. It's not a "how-to book," however, so don't expect to improve your search rankings the moment you put the book down, but you will return to your desk with a renewed vision to strive for simplicity and clarity.
One of my favorite insights from Goldman's book is why Google makes the choices that they do in product development and release. I've read everything the WSJ has ever written about Google, but even I didn't consider the side benefits that Google realized by launching Google 411 and Google Voice. Apparently listening to accents and dialects from around the US and the world helps them improve their voice recognition software, and that to me is sheer genius. Look to the consumer to do your homework for you. The lesson here is that as a marketer you need to know what the secondary effect will be of any product you launch... how can you leverage the information you'll collect? Anyone with a website today needs to think about their strategy in accordance with the rules and guidelines Goldman has laid out.
You'll want to be sure you take full advantage of the [...] reader companion for a LOT more content. You'll find how-to info there, and a bunch of other soul-satisfying tips. Goldman lays out the theory and structure for Google-relevant marketing in the book, but walks you through step-by-step at the site.
This is a marketing text that every brand needs to consume to stay ahead.

The Googlization of Everything: (And Why We Should Worry) ReviewThe Googlization of Everything offers a crisp vision for what kind of information society we should be building. That one might not agree with it is a feature -- this is a book that doesn't state the obvious. Rather, it pushes us to rethink what we take for granted, noticing the medium in which we swim, instead of just moving right along.
The book is an impressive synthesis of the current thinking on and around Google -- much of it applicable to any contemporary dot-com with runaway success. One of Siva's objections to the "googlization" of the online knowledge space is that while institutions like libraries and universities typically plan to be around in a hundred years, companies like Google do not necessarily have, or plan for, such staying power. This is a nicely contestable sentiment -- that, as a corporate entity, Google is inherently shorter lived then, say, the University of Virginia, or at least its values are less consistent over time. It sets up a deeper question of what mix of institutions ought to contribute to the world and serve as gateways to our accumulated knowledge, and with what ethos (ethoi?).
In the last section, Siva proposes a Human Knowledge Project. The name is derived from the Human Genome Project. It is intended to be a "global information ecosystem," essentially a Google by and for the public sphere: "The Human Knowledge Project should [be] open, public, global, multilingual, and focused. It should be sensitive to the particular needs of communities of potential knowledge users around the world, yet it should be committed to building a global system that can erase the gaps in knowledge that current exist between a child growing up in a poor village in South Africa and another growing up in a wealthy city in Canada." The Human Knowledge Project also builds on the criticism that Google's rise to such extreme prominence is due in part to the failure of the public sector; thus Siva's proposal is a straight argument for a transfer of power back from private to public hands.
A major difference between this idealized project and the internet (or Google) as it exists now is its central focus on existing libraries as knowledge hubs. One of Siva's central concerns about Google, which emerges in the sections on Google Books and Google Scholar, is its pre-emption of librarians as organizers of knowledge. In his other work -- see The Anarchist in the Library: How the Clash Between Freedom and Control Is Hacking the Real World and Crashing the System -- Siva has sought to articulate a central role for librarians that some in the information studies community have yet to grasp. The Googlization of Everything is in some ways a sequel: a welcome contribution to our debates over the future of access to knowledge, one blending intimate knowledge of what librarians (and their digital corporate counterparts) actually do with a strong sense of what differences between them matter -- why the library remains of crucial importance as a mediating institution in a society awash in information.The Googlization of Everything: (And Why We Should Worry) Overview

I'm Feeling Lucky: The Confessions of Google Employee Number 59 ReviewTo be honest, I wasnt sure of what to expect from this book. The review copy arrived at the same time I got my hands on two other Google books- In The Plex: How Google Thinks, Works, and Shapes Our Lives and The Googlization of Everything: (And Why We Should Worry). Both of those books are serious takes on different elements of Google. I wasn't really sure where "I'm feeling lucky" would fit in.
I was pleasantly surprised then to see it as a refreshingly unique and non-techie/non-geeky take on Google by a marketing guy who hit upon his motherlode with what was then yet another tech startup from the valley. Douglas Edwards, a marketing guy from the Valley who gets into Google without knowing much about the technology or where it would take him, makes an interesting person's eyes to view Google from.
There is some amount of technology covered here but more of the Dummies style where the author assumes the reader knows nothing. There is also a fish out of water element pervasive throughout the book that is alternatively funny and overdone. The other fun part about the book is the plethora of anecdotes from Google's early days from an insider. Some of these nuggets give a human tone to the massive entity that is Google. Some of the otherwise unknown and background characters from the early days of Google get their share of their limelight here. As someone who has read every decent book on Google out there, I came to know of quite a few such early day champions from Google.
Geeks might not find a whole lot of new stuff here but I liked the book for what it tries to be- an non-engineering insiders view of Google. Its fun and worth a read.I'm Feeling Lucky: The Confessions of Google Employee Number 59 Overview

The Google Resume: How to Prepare for a Career and Land a Job at Apple, Microsoft, Google, or any Top Tech Company ReviewI've always struggled with writing appropriate things on my resume. Specially when I had to squeeze everything in a single page.
Reading this book not only changed the way I now compose my resumes, but also how I view other people's resumes too. It is impressive how clueless people are when sending resumes which will not stand out among the other dozens (maybe even hundreds) of resumes sent to hiring managers.
Gayle has done a superb job at describing why most resumes are thrown away even before they are read completely. She will tell you how to avoid these mistakes and what you should do to build an impressive resume.
Gayle has also covered some important questions you should be prepared for in case you get called for an interview (which is more likely to happen if you read this book). It is definetely something you should pay attention to if you really want to make a good impression with your interviewers.
It is a pleasant read. She writes only the important stuff, giving no room for the things that don't matter.
If you are in college, just graduated, or struggling trying to get the "Dream Job", you must check out this book. It is an invaluable reference.The Google Resume: How to Prepare for a Career and Land a Job at Apple, Microsoft, Google, or any Top Tech Company Overview
