The Qualitative Researcher's Companion ReviewScholars interested in brushing up on analyzing qualitative date will benefit from the insights offered by Miles and Huberman. Those seeking to enter this field of inquiry will also be a primary audience for their offering. In this book they present a broad overview of the methody of analyzing data collected in qualitative research.
On the subject of presenting findings, they are to be commended for explaining the value of the use of a matrix. It is a means of clarifying data for academic audiences. Designing a matrix is an act of creativity.
In my opinion they go too far in arguing for the generalization of of results. They sound too much like quantitative researchers. Qualitative and quantitative inquirers have different objectives. There should be no reason to argue for similarities when these differences exist for good reason, i.e., the research questions are framed differently. Different results should be expected. Each method has its set of strenghts and weaknesses. That's why one method compliments the other. Generally speaking, however, this is a worthwhile book that explains what it seeks to explain in a comprehensive way.The Qualitative Researcher's Companion Overview

Although this volume was primary designed for Occupational and Physical Therapists, it should have a broader audience. It includes over 80 instruments with a summary on how to employ each device with estimates of reliability and validity. They give more than adequate details to enable the professional to make decisions regarding the quality and appropriateness of each single measure. Users of these tools need to comprehend the extreme lengths that it took for McDowell and Newell to accomplish their task. Their work is truly impressive. On pages 47-50, the authors do a particularly good job explaining the difference between ADL and IADL.
In addition, the authors do a particularly good job in providing technical details needed by professionals to make decisions about the need and appropriateness of an instrument to serve the specific needs of a patient. Students who are learning about calibration of psychometric instruments will also find the work beneficial. They will immediately see the practical application of theoretical concepts presented in classroom decisions. I have placed this fine book on closed serve for students to use after my presentation on reliability and validity.

The SAGE Handbook of Qualitative Research ReviewCaution, this is not a review of the 4th edition per se but a comment on Amazon's habitual lumping reviews from any edition of a title into one and the same.
Here is a quote from the text under Product Description: "As with earlier editions, the Fourth Edition is virtually a new volume."
The most helpful viewpoint is even older, probably for the 2nd edition based on the posted date, August 22nd, 2004.
As with other compendiums of articles from cutting edge pioneers in a field, an older edition may have the material you want or may not. Examine carefully the table of contents of whichever edition you decide to purchase. Sometimes articles by the respective authors and on the respective topic may be just as readily available through electronic journals, assuming you are a grad student or working in higher ed.

Definitely a must-have for anyone who needs to learn and apply basic/advanced epidemiological methods rigorously in clinical as well as general population settings.
