Immigrant Stories: Ethnicity and Academics in Middle Childhood (Child Development in Cultural Context) ReviewImmigrant Stories: Ethnicity and Academics in Middle Childhood by Cynthia T. García Coll and Amy Kerivan Marks is a must-read for anyone who does research on child development, who cares for or teaches immigrant children, and who knows immigrant children. Currently, one of five children in the U.S. is either an immigrant child (himself or herself migrated to the U.S. from another country) or a child of immigrant parents. In fewer than 25 years, these children, together with other non-immigrant minority children will be America's new majority. Previous generations will need to depend on the productive life of these children when they reach adulthood. Yet research on immigrant children and families has remained scarce.
Immigrant Stories marks, undoubtedly, a major progress in filling this research gap. García Coll and Marks studied three different cultural groups--Portuguese, Dominican, and Cambodian-- located in the small but highly diverse city of Providence, capital of Rhode Island. Anyone who has studied any cultural group knows how daunting a task it is. But García Coll and Marks studied three vastly different cultural groups not in their own home cultures but in the U.S. They did not just send out a few surveys at one point in time, but they followed two cohorts of some 400 children and families for three years! They adopted the most celebrated ecological theory of child development in order to guide their research, but they also challenged the theory as lacking insight into the ever more expanding and complex context of immigrants. García Coll and Marks did what many researchers would not even attempt. They used both quantitative and qualitative methods to gather a vast amount of data from neighborhoods, parents, schools and teachers, and children themselves. Because of language difficulties and cultural differences, their team overcame tremendous challenges in order to collect data.
Immigrant Stories offers so many detailed and insightful analyses of these different groups' patterns of acculturation. The volume is a research gem that will inform parents, communities, educators, policy makers, and researchers themselves. Readers will be glad to have laid their hands on this remarkable book.

Research Methods in Anthropology: Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches ReviewNow in a newly updated and expanded fourth edition, "Research Methods In Anthropology: Qualitative And Quantitative Approaches" by H. Russell Bernard (Professor of Anthropology, University of Florida) is a basic, comprehensive, 803-page introductory textbook on the research methods used in anthropology today. Written in a thoroughly 'reader friendly' conversational style that combines rigorous scientific methodology with Professor Bernard's wry sense of humor and experienced-based common sense, this new edition of "Research Methods In Anthropology" has an extensive bibliography and copious real-world examples, as well as sections on computer-based interviewing methods, management of electronic field notes, recording equipment and voice recognition software, text analysis, and the collection/analysis of visual materials. Ideal for college level courses in anthropology, "Research Methods In Anthropology" is also to be strongly recommended as accessibly informative for non-specialist general readers with an interest in anthropological research.Research Methods in Anthropology: Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches Overview

Moscow, December 25, 1991: The Last Day of the Soviet Union ReviewAn excellent, detailed and meticulous account of the last day of the Soviet Union, a pivotal day in the 20th century. Who would have dreamed the "evil empire" as Ronald Reagan called it, the nation that launched the communist revolution that would kill more than 100 million people, would die with a whimper and a legal signature?
The author details more than the last day. He tells about the the days, weeks and years that led up to it. It is ironic that the two central characters, Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin, hated one another. At one time they were both reformers but the relationship soured.
It's odd that more has not been written on the demise of the Soviet Union. The History channel is replete with Hitler stories and there are still plenty of World War II books but there is not an equal amount of scholarship about the Soviet Union. This books helps correct that. Some of the details are fascinating, and a few are dull but all are important.
The author is interested only in facts and details but there is some regret he doesn't dwell more on the significance of the Dec. 25. date. It must be noted that God must have a great sense of irony. The citadel of atheism evaporated on Christmas Day. Books could be written on that irony or coincidence (if it is a coincidence).
A exceptional history book.Moscow, December 25, 1991: The Last Day of the Soviet Union Overview
