Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics: Expert Consult - Online and Print ReviewThe first edition was published in 1983 with Melvin D Levine from Boston, William B Carey from Philadelphia, Allen C Crocker from Bosten and Ruth T Gross from Stanford. Gross retired after the first edition, Levine now at Chapel Hill retired after three editions, while Carey and Crocker are still going strong, but supported by three new editors from Chapel Hill, Denver and Palo Alto in order to update and revise with the new developments in this field over the past ten years.
This book has eleven sections: Life stages, environment, biological influences, general physical illness, behaviuoral and emotional outcomes, school function, physical function outcomes, developmental outcomes, assessment, management and treatment and legal and ethical issues with a total of 101 chapters. A very comprehensive book with even a chapter on disasters, war and terrorism and child response and mangement. A full spectrum of very competent academics and clinicians, who have authored these 101 chapters with a very pleasant layout and format.
I am especially happy to see the chapter on intellectual disability by Ellen Elias and Allen Crocker and satisfied that they have opted to use the international term for what was mental retardation, development disability or learning disability as they call it in the United Kingdom.
A book for the specialist in developmental-behavioral pediatrics, but also for the general pediatrician working in the community because many children that will be seen in the community is described here. Also for other professionals from other disciplines working with children and their families.

Introduction to Personality: Toward an Integrative Science of the Person ReviewI adopted this book for one of my classes, based on Mischel being one of the authors (a respected personality researcher), and the format of the book. Unfortunately, I did not read it thoroughly before adopting it. All I can say, is that I pity my poor students who are trying to get a grasp of personality theories based on this book, fortunately they have lectures to help understand this material and also correct mistakes within this material. For example, when describing the personality trait of "Intuitive," the authors define this as "quick guesses." What a grossly misleading and absolutely incorrect definition. Further, the authors use a lot of "psychobable" specific to personality researchers, which may be useful for someone who is a personality researcher, but is rather confusing for undergraduate students where this is their first exposure to such theories. I thought this would be a nice, empirically-based personality theories book. Unfortunately, it is confusing and poorly organized. Principles of Information Systems ReviewOne of the book's biggest problems is that it rambles. The book has 14 multi-topic-chapters. This could be solved with going to 20 or 24 focused chapters. Part of the problem is the book's target audience - accounting, business or management majors that should know what IT can do for them. I have over 25 years in business and over 10 years in IT, dealing with Fortune 100 companies to mom and pop shops. When I read this book, I get they impression they talked to one person or one company and they take that as industry standards. Oops these generalizations miss the mark. If they talk to only one company they should say so- this is the way XYZ does this. If you have a 42 page chapter called "Database Systems and Business Intelligence" the business intelligence (BI) section should be longer than a 1/2 page. I have thought this book wouldn't be a good value at half the price.Principles of Information Systems Overview

The Skills of Helping Individuals, Families, Groups, and Communities (with CD) ReviewIt's a shame that this book continues to find it's way into the required reading lists in graduate social work classes.
This book illustrates the tasks of interviewing and intervention in a very simplified and concrete fashion. In an introductory text, this is acceptable. However, in describing the "skills of helping" there is little if any attention given to an overarching theory of how people think, feel and behave. Intervention and theory inform one another in a continuous feedback loop. To presume to teach intervention without teaching a model of human behavior simply misses the point.
Professional training is, at it's best, about integrating theory and technique. This book fosters a disconnect between the tasks of intervention and a larger theoretical sense of what intervention is based on. In that sense it does an enormous disservice to trainees, who are the principal audience of this text.
I bought this book, as many people do, because it was required reading in my graduate program. I used it only for the occasional paper that demanded it be cited. When I wanted to referr to something useful, I read Shawn Shea's "Psychiatric Interviewing" or Leston Haven's "Making Contact." These are both excellent, accessible, well written and USEFULL books that any mental health trainee would benefit from reading.
If you have to buy the book to do course work in your classes you can't be faulted for purchasing it. If you really want to understand the dynamics of helping people, if you really want to learn how to interview, if you actually want to learn something that will be of enduring value to your practice, don't waste your time with this book.The Skills of Helping Individuals, Families, Groups, and Communities (with CD) Overview

This is another example of schools very frequently requiring new versions of a book, with just a few changes, to make it seem as if you MUST purchase the newest version, while an older, dicounted version would suit you just as well.
My shool did not have any used books for sale. The school was charging @$200.00 plus, I paid @$150.00 here, and the last version sold here for @ $25.00! If you are considering purchasing this book, look for an older version.
