The Voice of the Blues: Classic Interviews from Living Blues Magazine ReviewLiving Blues magazine has always been the leading periodical in the field in the US; one reason for this is the superb interviews with bluesmen/women that have graced its pages since its founding in the 1970s. Allowing artists to tell their stories fully and freely, often prodded on by knowledgeable and probing question by the interviewers Jim O'Neal and Amy Van Singel, produced important first-hand documentation of the art form. This book compiles a dozen of those interviews, ranging from Georgia Tom Dorsey to Muddy Waters, Eddie Boyd to Little Esther. One of the most fascinating is the very long (the longest in the magazine's history) interview with Delta blues legend Houston Stackhouse who was able to relate first-hand information and reminiscences of just about all the great bluesmen who worked in Mississippi and Arkansas going all the way back to Tommy Johnson. But all of the interviews plumb deeply into each artist's background, career, opinions, and memories, and that's what makes them (and the book) so interesting and indispensable. The Judge: William P. Clark, Ronald Reagan's Top Hand Review
A fine study of how one remarkable man added to the strength of another remarkable man guiding this country to a peaceful ending of the Cold War.
A very informative and rewarding reading experience -- somewhat like a good novel, you hate to have it end. Although this book is a biography of Judge Clark, it is extremely valuable in placing before the American public how and why Ronald Reagan was a successful President and led the United States to Victory in the Cold War.
The author's emphasis on Judge Clark's philosophy of "Let Reagan Be Reagan" is so important and in such contrast to other key advisors. Judge Clark's exemplary style of Leadership and Management contributed much to his function as Reagan's "top hand." Clark's humility, loving care and concern for those who worked for him, plus his family and friends, displays great character. The concern and dignity Secretary Clark paid his driver, Joe, is obvious by considering this driver his friend rather than "government chattel." Especially touching is the scene where Clark brought Joe before the President to show off his belt buckle. Joe had served another Secretary for three years who had never bothered to speak a word to him.
References to the "Divine Plan" for Judge Clark and President Reagan, along with their Faith and belief in God, exemplifies what is missing at the top in our government today, something we desperately need. Strengthened by his belief in God and his devout Catholic background, Clark was able to serve Reagan well in various critical and important assignments. Clark's wise judgments added immeasrably to the success of President Reagan.
Authors Kengor and Doerner are to be commended for bringing this valuable Biography and Presidential History to the attention of the American public. Job well done.

Pure Goldwater ReviewFor those of us of a certain age, Barry Goldwater was the prickly candidate for president in 1964, whose "extremism in defense of liberty" speech turned away millions of voters. But Goldwater stayed around long after that and it's a good thing he did. "Pure Goldwater", a neatly arranged compilation of his journal entries (along with some letters and speeches) reveals a much more complex and attractive man than the public got to know more than a generation ago.
The title of the book could not have been more appropriate. Here we see Senator Goldwater in all of his frankness, lambasting presidents with whom he worked, yet revelling in the love of his family, photography, flying and service to his country. In reading "Pure Goldwater" it's not hard to be in agreement with him on one page and subsequently want to wring his neck on the next. He seemed always to be on the cutting edge of the day's events, even when he was doing some of the "cutting", himself. It's fascinating to see him comment on every president from FDR to Clinton and there was much about most of them he didn't like.
Much of the book centers around his relationship with Richard Nixon and the trials and tribulations of Watergate and perhaps the most intriguing part of the book follows his recollections on summing up Nixon's chances in the Senate for impeachment survival. I remember that day well and how it changed my mind about Senator Goldwater. Here was a true statesman rising to the occasion in a most difficult time in our nation's history.
Barry Goldwater's seeming drift to the left regarding such issues as women's choice and gay rights no doubt sent shivers up and down the collective spines of his conservative colleagues. But Goldwater reasoned well and was always practical and this will be a big part of his legacy...a conservative man ahead of his time. "Pure Goldwater" is a pure joy to read and I commend John Dean and Barry Goldwater, Jr. for allowing us this terrific look at the senator...as told through his own words. Angene and Jack Wilson's Voices from the Peace Corps: Fifty years of Kentucky Volunteers is a masterwork of scholarship, organization, history, and memoir.
Volunteers themselves in the first Peace Corps group sent to Liberia, the Wilsons embody the deep understanding needed to add context and connective tissue and the professionalism to wrestle a mountain of material into an accessible page-turner.
Even among notoriously resilient, flexible and open-minded Peace Corps people, the Wilsons are a head above. For nearly 50 years they have maintained friendships, recounted briefly at the end of this volume, with their Liberian students and colleagues that have grown into richly intertwined lives.
And now, after seven years of research, interviews and writing, they have amassed an invaluable record of the Peace Corps experience that is historically detailed and personally touching. Their book, mere bound sheets of paper and ink, is as interactive as a relational database. Readers can go to topic chapters, follow the threads of particular Volunteers or just open to a random page and discover an engaging episode.
Built on interviews with 100 Kentucky Volunteers, Voices illuminates the universal Peace Corps experience. Reflections from these Volunteers open each chapter and provide continuity through topics.
Other individual voices are interspersed across the arc of a tour of service telling about their decision to join, their training, work in host countries, dealing with strange food, homesickness, friendships, travel, illness, exotic animals, different social practices and expectations - all the facets of their lives over 5 decades in cultures around the world - to their reentry in American society and the lasting impact of their Peace Corps tour on their lives and on the individuals and communities among whom they lived. All of this happens with such clarity, the narrative flows as if it were one voice.
The annotation is thorough yet discrete; country and dates of service identify each Volunteer, yet never impede the story. The book also contains photographs and an excellent index and bibliography.
All former Peace Corps Volunteers will find themselves in these pages. Anyone who has lived in a foreign place will feel in familiar territory, and anyone who has never left the shelter of home will feel empowered to step into the world.
I highly recommend this superb book. You will see in Angene and Jack Wilson true writers and planners at work and begin to understand why the Peace Corps has prevailed and inspired so many.

Fahs shows how a new spirit of adventure, independence, and women's community could be found side by side with exploitation in the newsrooms of New York City. Even when women journalists were confined to the early 20th cent. woman's page, she argues, they created "one of the public spaces of the suffrage movement." And "human interest" journalism, also relegated to women, expressed "genuine curiosity about how other peoples lived," along with "an expanded sense of the self." Shannon Miller: My Child, My Hero ReviewOverall, I think this book is a better book than the one authored by Shannon herself. Yes, it is a bit overdone in spots, but any mother who loves her child is going to overdo things a bit. I also think it's easy to discount the overdramatized and over done things while still enjoying a good read. Shannon's relationships and not so perfect side of life as a world class gymnast are also better discribed here than in Shannon's book, the Miller world doesn't always seem so eerily perfect in this book. I think it's probably as well done and as "objective" of a portrait as any mother could do for her daughter. As for the weight issues and other things, nobody in gymnastics truly ever talks about those things, and most don't find a problem with them. I didn't expect Shannon's mother too either, and wasn't suprised when she didn't discuss the subject.Shannon Miller: My Child, My Hero Overview

Freedom's Orator: Mario Savio and the Radical Legacy of the 1960s ReviewFREEDOM'S ORATOR is a superb book about a major figure from the 1960s. As an historian, I've thought many times about the mysterious process by which certain people appear and seem to be made for their moment, by reason of personal qualities of high principle, magnetism and decency. Mario Savio was such a person in Berkeley in 1964, and this book helps us to understand why and how he was so important. Moreover, it illuminates the sources of his activism. But it is not uncritical. In fact, I think that Cohen does a wonderful job of analyzing Savio's demons as well as as his strengths. Moscow, December 25, 1991: The Last Day of the Soviet Union ReviewAn excellent, detailed and meticulous account of the last day of the Soviet Union, a pivotal day in the 20th century. Who would have dreamed the "evil empire" as Ronald Reagan called it, the nation that launched the communist revolution that would kill more than 100 million people, would die with a whimper and a legal signature?
The author details more than the last day. He tells about the the days, weeks and years that led up to it. It is ironic that the two central characters, Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin, hated one another. At one time they were both reformers but the relationship soured.
It's odd that more has not been written on the demise of the Soviet Union. The History channel is replete with Hitler stories and there are still plenty of World War II books but there is not an equal amount of scholarship about the Soviet Union. This books helps correct that. Some of the details are fascinating, and a few are dull but all are important.
The author is interested only in facts and details but there is some regret he doesn't dwell more on the significance of the Dec. 25. date. It must be noted that God must have a great sense of irony. The citadel of atheism evaporated on Christmas Day. Books could be written on that irony or coincidence (if it is a coincidence).

American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer ReviewMy father spent most of his career in nuclear engineering researching the mathematics of nuclear reactors at Brookhaven. My father had visited all the national labs and got to know all the key players in nuclear physics in the period from 1950-1970. Growing up in that environment I naturally knew a bit about Oppenheimer and Teller and others. It was clear to me that my father had sympathy for Oppenheimer and a great deal of respect. Teller was viewed more as a politician looking for fame and publicity. This became even more apparent to me when in the 1980s I saw how he lobbied the Reagan administration for research on laser based strategic defense satellites.
This book is an account of Oppenheimer's life from childhood through the Manhattan Project with emphasis on the most crucial part of his career as the head of the Los Alamos Laboratory where physicists mathematicians and chemists teamed up to develop the first nuclear weapons that were used against Japan. Oppenheimer was a reserved man who did not seek the limelight. He was brilliant but his biggest asset was his management and leadership capabilities along with very good judgement, something that Teller seemed to lack. It was just these qualities of leadership that led to the succcessful development of the atomic bomb in a few short years at Los Alamos. His liberal past and pre-war affiliation with communism caused him great difficulties and some in the military feared that he was a security risk. He was continually being checked out by J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI. Hoover did not like the appointment of Oppenheimer to the key leadership position at Los Alamos.
After the war was over, strangely the man who was able to keep secrets during the crucial period of the Manhattan Project was not trusted after the war. He lost security clearance and struggled due to the increased fear of communism from the post-war Soviet Union including the wave of witchhunting during the Joseph McCarthy era. He was liberal and his pre-war past communist associations hurt him deeply. His philosophy on nuclear weapons and his clashes with his former colleague Joseph Teller made for a tormented post-war career. I believe Oppenheomer felt guilt over his involvement in the development of the bomb and was definitely against the arms race. This period of his life as well as his childhood was important to understand the complexities of this man. The authors do a good job of covering this and do not fall into the trap of just emphasizing the war years.
This book is engaging and very successful at portraying the life character and personality of J. Robert Oppenheimer. He was the right man for a difficult and challenging job and had what it took to get the most out of an odd group of geniuses.American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J.
