Security and Loss Prevention, Fifth Edition: An Introduction ReviewThis fifth edition (2007) of Philip Purpura's "Security and Loss Prevention" has been undated to take an all-hazards look at the modern business of protecting business from loss, broadly defined.
Purpura sees loss prevention as any method by which individuals or organizations can prevent and control loss of assets, whether people, money, productivity or materials, under a variety of circumstances, including crime, fire, natural disaster, error or poor management. This broad-brush approach allow the author to address traditional physical security concerns, and also newer or less-traditional threats such as terrorism, natural disaster, workplace violence, information theft, substance abuse, and adverse legal action, to mention just a few topics.
The approach to each topic includes definitions, discussions, checklists, and questions designed to stimulate critical thinking. The text includes a nice selection of illustrations and graphics.
"Security and Loss Prevention" is an extremely useful introduction to the security business, suitable for the classroom and the workplace, and highly recommended to the teacher and the security professional.Security and Loss Prevention, Fifth Edition: An Introduction Overview

Design Thinking for Interiors: Inquiry, Experience, Impact ReviewI enjoyed the book throughout. I especially thought that taking into considerations of a residentls age, life expectancy, and past experiences added much to the ambience one would enjoy should they occupy the space. This was a novel approach to design. The graphics throughout the book were quite appropriate and yet artfully done. The novel approach that the author takes to make the surroundings
pleasant exhibit a breath of fresh air to design.Design Thinking for Interiors: Inquiry, Experience, Impact Overview

Identifying Hidden Needs: Creating Breakthrough Products ReviewMost experts fail to explore the foundation of innovation: research. Authors Keith Goffin, Fred Lemke and Ursula Koners believe most new products fail because they are not based on research that uncovers consumers' "hidden needs." Developing new offerings based on the data produced by outdated research methods is like trying to cook a gourmet meal with inferior ingredients. The authors try to put a human face on ethnographic research by supplying several case studies per chapter, but that does little to relieve the dry and technical nature of the subject matter. The text is not for the casual reader. For market researchers and product developers, however, getAbstract believes this treatise will offer new, worthy ideas and methods presented in a variety of formats with charts, graphs, grids and more.Identifying Hidden Needs: Creating Breakthrough Products Overview

Designing Brand Identity: A Complete Guide to Creating, Building, and Maintaining Strong Brands ReviewThis book is a revelation. I found pp.46-47, Staying on Message, to distill what's so appealing about the book as a whole - it's a masterpiece of delivering just the right information, and just the right amount of information: completely, concisely, brilliantly. In this section, as in Measuring Success (and really, throughout the book), what Alina Wheeler says is all anyone really needs to know. I loved the truly amazing organization of the book - in fact, of each page in the book, and the book itself is the best example of design and content working together to support the whole. I feel like it's the only book I'll ever need - it's a wonderful resource on so many aspects of branding, design, communication, and production - all in one easily accessible place!

Systems Analysis and Design ReviewPrice reflects quality. This book is superb for System Analyst and Designers (SAD), both beginner and advanced ones. It is very informative that can be used for both learning and reference purposes. The authors explain everything very clearly using the same case examples (CD Selection case) and exercises for every chapter, so it's very easy to understand and keep track as you move chapter by chapter. I used to screw up in SAD but as I started using this book, I learned much more and much better than before. Thanks to the authors for thier good job and my professor who recommended this book to the class. Highly recommended for anyone interested in SAD.Systems Analysis and Design Overview

Designing Brand Identity: An Essential Guide for the Whole Branding Team ReviewAs a young design professional with 5 years of experience, I came to this book with an existing knowledge-base about branding and a desire to streamline my design process.
Part 1, Brand Basics, will be familiar to anyone who works in branding. Words like "positioning" are defined, accompanied by brief anecdotes about known brands. It lived up to my expectations -- a refresher with some nice quotes.
Part 2, Process, sets out to elaborate the actual steps toward making a brand. This is where the book unraveled for me. I had hoped for in-depth examples from the author's (or her contributers') experience and hard facts. If they needed to update a logo, who sat down with who? Where, when, and how often? What was the first thing they decided to do? What was the outcome of that decision? What did the first sketches look like?
Instead, I found descriptions far too vague and generalized to be of much help. For example, the page on Naming first lists a lot of common sense: dictionaries and thesauruses are good resources, and paring down large lists takes patience. Next, the actual process is stated, with steps such as "develop decision-making process" and "create numerous names." These leave me wanting so much more -- the former seems deliberately irritating (my process is making a process?) while the latter is simplistically obvious. While I understand that there's no magic process or correct number of names that works in every situation, detailed examples from real branding decisions certainly would have illuminated the concepts better.
Part 3, Best Practices, would more accurately be named More Anecdotes. Each spread tells a bit about the branding efforts of brands such as Hot Wheels or FedEx. These serve as interesting and inspiring stories, but there is not enough depth or detail to make them practical examples.
To sum up: because this is not a particularly dense read and the information is accurate, I would recommend it to a student. As a professional, I would prefer more substance. While the author labels it "a quick reference guide", I found it to be a very quick overview.Designing Brand Identity: An Essential Guide for the Whole Branding Team Overview
