The Management Team Handbook: Five Key Strategies for Maximizing Group Performance (Jossey-Bass Business & Management) ReviewI would use this book if I were forming a new management team.
It provides an efficient, structured process for talking about real business issues over a period of weeks rather than hours. It easily be integrated into regular staff meetings or retreats. An executive or consultant could modify as needed to suit the situation.
I attended a seminar led by the author when the book first came out, and she knows her stuff. The Management Team Handbook: Five Key Strategies for Maximizing Group Performance (Jossey-Bass Business & Management) Overview

Mining Group Gold, Third Edition: How to Cash in on the Collaborative Brain Power of a Team for Innovation and Results ReviewMining Group Gold is a Mandatory Book for Sales Professionals. It was my privilege to know and work with Tom Kayser at Xerox during the time he wrote the first edition of his book, Mining Group Gold. I encourage every sales manager to buy this 3rd Edition for your team. The principles in Mining Group Gold helped me close multi-milliondollar deals faster and more efficiently. In every step of the salescycle there are a gazillion meetings: uncovering requirements, presentations, demonstrations, customer engagement, negotiating T&C's,and closing-the-deal meetings. Following contract signatures are implementation, account management, problem resolution meetings. The Mining Group Gold principles guided my daily approach to meetings whether facilitating a room full of people, a conference call between Russia and Israel, or meeting someone over coffee at Starbucks. One memorable Fortune 100 company implementation kickoff was held in Oregon where a half dozen of us met with 20 senior technical engineering managers, program directors, and executive management. This two hour meeting was calculated to cost just under $7,000.00. At the beginning of the meeting, aside from stating desired mutual outcomes, setting an agenda, designating roles, I set expectations by asking each person to introduce themselves, their role, and what they needed from this meeting to get their job done. I explicitly encouraged everyone to talk, meet, and contact each other. At the end of the session after summarizing what's been discussed with assigned ownership and timeframes to the task, I asked each person in the room to comment on next steps. The results of this collaborative conversation exceeded my expectations. The group brought up critical timing schedules with design, test, prototypes, potential technical glitches. We talked about work travel, holiday schedules, potential conflicts, needed approvals, and much more. Nothing was too trivial to discuss. Within a year, a successful launch of a new medical device was introduced to the market. The elements of Mining Group Gold work;and they work well.

Relational Intelligence: How Leaders Can Expand Their Influence Through a New Way of Being Smart (Jossey-Bass Leadership Network Series) Review
I received Steve Saccone's book from a friend unexpectedly. I had listened to Steve via the Mosaic Podcast and at the Awaken Conference. He serves in LA as a part of Mosaic, where he develops young leaders and some of my friends have worked under his leadership.
This is Steve's first book and it speaks into an often unexplored area of leadership. Steve begins with the reality that many leaders accomplish their goals at the cost of their relationships with those they lead. A leader can show productivity, passion, imagination, and resourcefulness, but he or she can be relationally dumb in interacting with others. I have so many experiences with leaders in the church that knew the Bible well and had seminary degrees but lacked basic people skills that made their work difficult.
Some of my favorite nuggets from the book:
-In the past, authority and credibility were built on status, power or position, but in today's world it's built on power and trust. To be relationally intelligent, we must shift from a positional authority mind-set to the crucial mind-set of relational authority.
-Leaders treat people as a commodity. (OUCH!)
-When we love people well, we become the proof of God.
-Many leaders deflect responsibility and accountability instead of
absorbing it.
-We all have a little bit of Michael Scott in us.
-To be a person is to have a story to tell. (Isak Dinesen)
-If we want to be relational geniuses, we must learn to capitalize on moment's when we see people's values being lived out.
I could list so many great ideas here, but I think Steve makes his goal possible here by the content and context of this book. I think you and I can become more sensitive to our intuition and more aware of the people around us. I think we can develop new habits that are reflective of core values that remind us to value the people we are serving with, not just the task we are bound together in. In this process, "leaders realize that the more people they bring with them, the more powerful the effect they can have on changing the future and making the world a better place."
As the African proverb states, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, bring others with you."
Great book, Steve!Relational Intelligence: How Leaders Can Expand Their Influence Through a New Way of Being Smart (Jossey-Bass Leadership Network Series) Overview

Team Players and Teamwork, Completely Updated and Revised: New Strategies for Developing Successful Collaboration ReviewGlenn Parker's book, Team Players and Teamwork (second edition: 2008) offers a variety of insights and ideas to help organizations and teams succeed in a world of cross-functional teams. While the first edition of this book provided valuable information for internal and external team-builders, the second edition offers even more for "people who see teamwork as a business strategy and want it to come alive."
The book presents data from 51 organizations that have used teamwork in a strategic manner and achieved desired results. Correctly, Parker sees teamwork as a way for forward-thinking organizations to improve results, enhance productivity, generate innovations, build collaboration, maximize diverse contributions, and improve service.
The book is about "team players," and continues his exploration of the four styles of the team player that are identified in the Parker Team Player Survey (PTPS): Contributor, Collaborator, Communicator, and Challenger. This book delves more deeply into the typical characteristics of these team player styles and examines the virtues of those who possess more than one prominent style. Further, this book applies the positive actions of each type of team player to Tuckman's "stages of team development." This helps team players know the actions they can take at the various stages to support their team in its development. This content will be very valuable for trainers and facilitators who work with the PTPS in team development interventions.
The book also adds emphasis to the leader role's in team success. This edition takes the style concept and broadens the ways that team leaders can know themselves and bring their best as team leaders. In addition, Parker presents 12 characteristics of an effective team, relating the team leadership styles directly to several of these characteristics: planning, communication, risk-taking, problem-solving, and decision-making. This chapter will be very helpful for team leaders who want to apply the team leadership concepts directly in these important roles.
Finally, I found great value in the data presented in the "Resources" section of the book. It presents more data on the distribution of team player styles in organizations, in some cases broken out by industry sector. Since I use the PTPS in team development workshops, this added data will strengthen understanding of one's own style and appreciation of others'. Team Players and Teamwork will help readers see the strategic value of team development, the elements to address, and the important role of "style" in helping teams perform at high levels.

Thunder Dog: The True Story of a Blind Man, His Guide Dog, and the Triumph of Trust at Ground Zero ReviewWith the events of 9/11 forever etched in my memory, I was eager to read "Thunder Dog" by Michael Hingson with Suzy Flory. As the subtitle tells, it's "The True Story of a Blind Man, His Guide Dog & the Triumph of Trust at Ground Zero."
Reading a story about a man who survived the September 11th terrorist attack on the World Trade Center is compelling enough. But add to the story the fact that the man, Michael Hingson, is blind, has a guide dog Roselle and has to descend 78 stories on foot to get to safety and you have a gripping survival account by an unforgettable pair.
The story is well told, with a moment by moment account of Michael and Roselle's escape, along with colleague David Frank from their office located on the 78th floor in Tower I of the World Trade Center. Interspersed with the details of that fateful day are stories of Michael's life.
Michael was born two months premature and was blind due to pure oxygen he received as part of the standard medical treatment for premature babies. Michael parents didn't listen to the doctor's advice about putting him in a home for the blind. Instead they brought him home and raised their son no differently from his older brother Ellery. Before he ever had a guide dog or white cane, Michael was expected to grow, learn and explore his neighborhood on his own two feet. This boy had a spirit of adventure and he learned to ride a bike and even drive a car. Michael's feisty can-do spirit helped to prepared him to survive the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
Through Michael's story we learn about the bond between a blind person and their guide dog. Roselle is a special dog and was able to keep her focus and concentrate on guiding her master down 78 flights of stairs and through the streets of New York filled with debris and a monstrous toxin filled dust cloud that pursued survivors running from the World Trade Center.
I highly recommend this book. It was a gripping, interesting and unique story of survival by Michael Hingson and his guide dog Roselle. "Thunder Dog" is a touching and memorable book.
I received this book free from the publisher through the [...] book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255 : "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising."
