Recharge Your Team: The Grounded Visioning Approach ReviewI wasn't sure when I would read this book, but I picked it up and started browsing it the night it arrived, and found that it was describing a process that I was just about to launch at work. I read the main part of the book and then used the author's system to run my "grounded visioning" process, which I ran only two days later, and it worked like a charm. It really did have good ideas, and I was able to put them directly to use with minimal effort. It really helped me streamline how I was going to quickly go from brainstorming to action with this pretty diverse and opinionated group. What could have taken more than a day took 3 hours, was easy to plan, and people enjoyed the process."Recharge Your Team: The Grounded Visioning Approach Overview

Mining Group Gold, Third Edition: How to Cash in on the Collaborative Brain Power of a Team for Innovation and Results ReviewMining Group Gold is a Mandatory Book for Sales Professionals. It was my privilege to know and work with Tom Kayser at Xerox during the time he wrote the first edition of his book, Mining Group Gold. I encourage every sales manager to buy this 3rd Edition for your team. The principles in Mining Group Gold helped me close multi-milliondollar deals faster and more efficiently. In every step of the salescycle there are a gazillion meetings: uncovering requirements, presentations, demonstrations, customer engagement, negotiating T&C's,and closing-the-deal meetings. Following contract signatures are implementation, account management, problem resolution meetings. The Mining Group Gold principles guided my daily approach to meetings whether facilitating a room full of people, a conference call between Russia and Israel, or meeting someone over coffee at Starbucks. One memorable Fortune 100 company implementation kickoff was held in Oregon where a half dozen of us met with 20 senior technical engineering managers, program directors, and executive management. This two hour meeting was calculated to cost just under $7,000.00. At the beginning of the meeting, aside from stating desired mutual outcomes, setting an agenda, designating roles, I set expectations by asking each person to introduce themselves, their role, and what they needed from this meeting to get their job done. I explicitly encouraged everyone to talk, meet, and contact each other. At the end of the session after summarizing what's been discussed with assigned ownership and timeframes to the task, I asked each person in the room to comment on next steps. The results of this collaborative conversation exceeded my expectations. The group brought up critical timing schedules with design, test, prototypes, potential technical glitches. We talked about work travel, holiday schedules, potential conflicts, needed approvals, and much more. Nothing was too trivial to discuss. Within a year, a successful launch of a new medical device was introduced to the market. The elements of Mining Group Gold work;and they work well.

Team Players and Teamwork, Completely Updated and Revised: New Strategies for Developing Successful Collaboration ReviewGlenn Parker's book, Team Players and Teamwork (second edition: 2008) offers a variety of insights and ideas to help organizations and teams succeed in a world of cross-functional teams. While the first edition of this book provided valuable information for internal and external team-builders, the second edition offers even more for "people who see teamwork as a business strategy and want it to come alive."
The book presents data from 51 organizations that have used teamwork in a strategic manner and achieved desired results. Correctly, Parker sees teamwork as a way for forward-thinking organizations to improve results, enhance productivity, generate innovations, build collaboration, maximize diverse contributions, and improve service.
The book is about "team players," and continues his exploration of the four styles of the team player that are identified in the Parker Team Player Survey (PTPS): Contributor, Collaborator, Communicator, and Challenger. This book delves more deeply into the typical characteristics of these team player styles and examines the virtues of those who possess more than one prominent style. Further, this book applies the positive actions of each type of team player to Tuckman's "stages of team development." This helps team players know the actions they can take at the various stages to support their team in its development. This content will be very valuable for trainers and facilitators who work with the PTPS in team development interventions.
The book also adds emphasis to the leader role's in team success. This edition takes the style concept and broadens the ways that team leaders can know themselves and bring their best as team leaders. In addition, Parker presents 12 characteristics of an effective team, relating the team leadership styles directly to several of these characteristics: planning, communication, risk-taking, problem-solving, and decision-making. This chapter will be very helpful for team leaders who want to apply the team leadership concepts directly in these important roles.
Finally, I found great value in the data presented in the "Resources" section of the book. It presents more data on the distribution of team player styles in organizations, in some cases broken out by industry sector. Since I use the PTPS in team development workshops, this added data will strengthen understanding of one's own style and appreciation of others'. Team Players and Teamwork will help readers see the strategic value of team development, the elements to address, and the important role of "style" in helping teams perform at high levels.

The Trophy Kids Grow Up: How the Millennial Generation is Shaking Up the Workplace ReviewJournalist Ron Alsop (The Wall Street Journal) has taken a group of columns and expanded them into a book titled, The Trophy Kids Grow Up. Alsop's kids are the millennials, those born between 1980 and 2001, who have grown up with prosperity and have had lavish attention and praise wash over them throughout their lives. Now that they are arriving in the workplace, Alsop proposes ways that companies need to change to accommodate this generation of workers. I'm not as sure as Alsop is that this generation is shaking up the workplace. It may be that this group, to whatever extent they represent a real group, may be unrealistic in their expectations of the workplace, and are making their concerns heard. Some companies are listening and making changes; other companies are likely to tell them to grow up. Alsop provides lots of examples of what changes some companies are making. Each chapter ends with "chapter highlights" to recap his key points. I found this book to be tedious to read and sometimes repetitive. I was aghast to read about helicopter parents wanting (and sometimes getting) to sit in on performance assessment meetings with their children who are adults. My forecast is that this cohort called millennials may be starting out with expectations that some companies will be willing to meet. As the bulk of millennials come to the workforce, their expectations may become more realistic and more consistent with current corporate practices. If you read this book and decide to copy what some companies are doing, I encourage you to think twice, and make only those changes that you conclude are absolutely necessary to avoid alienating the talented millennials you want to become part of your organization.
Rating: Two-star (Mildly Recommended)

How to Hire A-Players: Finding the Top People for Your Team- Even If You Don't Have a Recruiting Department ReviewI haven't purchased the book and it may well be worth five stars from everyone. This review is intended as a sanity check for other people who buy lots of books on Amazon.com and who count on natural reviews to help guide their purchases.
I took a look at this book based in part on the remarkable rating. However, all current ratings (as of July 21, 2010) are five stars, mostly by Real Name(tm) reviewers who've never reviewed another book, mostly from around the day the book was first released (fast readers or advance copies?).
While the current thirteen rave reviews may indeed be legitimate, representative, and spontaneous, my spidey sense tingled as I went through them. I certainly don't doubt they're real people given that at least a couple of them (e.g. Jennifer Pausch and Rich Ledbetter) both appear to be existing customers of the author who've also provided nice testimonials for his website.
I theorize this is a deliberate (and a little too obvious) marketing campaign rather than spontaneous reviews like we rely on for most other books (or maybe other authors' publicists are just more subtle). If the former, to me that feels misleading and in bad faith towards those who look for a pattern in natural reviews to help make a buying decision.
Maybe Amazon also needs a "Disclosure: I know the author on a first name basis(tm)" demarcation? Or perhaps this is indeed a really awesome book with an unfortunate and irrelevant confluence of indicators in the reviews. I'm keen to see additional spontaneous and bona fide reviews from people who don't know the author and have read this book.

Just Listen: Discover the Secret to Getting Through to Absolutely Anyone ReviewOK, I'll admit it. I am a Dr. Goulston fan - I read his blog "Usable Insight" regularly. Which is why I hopped on the chance to preview a copy of his latest book, "Just Listen" ... And wow! am I glad I did.
This book exceeded my expectations. "Just Listen" is engaging, enthralling, and practical. Dr. Goulston lays out a system for improving your communication style that you can live with - no "fancy-smancy-gotta-change-your-sacred-self-or-else" stuff here. Instead, Dr. Goulston provides practical, usable insight that is applicable for in both your professional and personal lives.
Who hasn't needed to give themselves a "jeckectomy" every once in a while, or move themselves mentally and emotionally from "Oh F#@& to OK"? Even before I finished reading (and re-reading) "Just Listen", I was already trying out some of the techniques from "The Nine Core Rules for Getting Through to Anyone." The "Power Thank You?" I gave my mom one, and she cried. That one simple, powerful "thank you Mom" was a breakthrough in our relationship.
And if you're looking for real-life, day-to-day business scenarios in which to apply the techniques, look no further than the section titled, "Putting It All Together: Fast Fixes for Seven Challenging Situations." These scenarios would make team-building case studies and exercises!
No matter what you pay for this book, the insights inside are PRICELESS!Just Listen: Discover the Secret to Getting Through to Absolutely Anyone Overview
