Knowledge for Action: A Guide to Overcoming Barriers to Organizational Change ReviewArgyris cuts to the heart of why organizations go wrong with a combination of passion and precision. Several authors who have written about effective teams and organizations such as Peter Senge and Gerald (Jerry) Weinberg regard Argyris's work quite highly, and rightly so. While other authors talk about and round the problems and issues, Argyris creates models which show not just what people do, but how they think. Other books in the field of Organizational Design that I have looked at appear dry as dust next to Argris.Readers should be cautioned, however, that Argyris is a academic and researcher -- reading his books requires work, but work well worth the effort.- Cortlandt Wilson, Software ConsultanKnowledge for Action: A Guide to Overcoming Barriers to Organizational Change Overview

: Business Process Management and the Balanced Scorecard : Focusing Processes on Strategic Drivers ReviewRalph Smith says that his intention in writing this book as to "provide some common sense thoughts and implementation tips for process management and the balanced scorecard". He has done this, and done it very well. This book is packed with good practical suggestions about how to efficiently and effectively populate a Strategy Map. The link between process and strategy, ie between Business Process Management and the Balanced Scorecard (and Strategy Map), is also well made. In my own consulting work I have found that Strategy Maps can be an important key to process-based management. The Process perspective of the Strategy Map can be a portal into the processes of an organisation - both figuratively and, given the right modelling tool, literally. I would have liked to see more about how to first determine what are the core and supporting processes of an organisation; building a high level process model is a necessary step before you begin to analyse the processes. Smith's focus on the near forensic understanding of the context of a process is important and useful analysis techniques are described. Too often we leap in to modify (improve?) processes without knowing anything like enough about them. If you have an interest in finding out more about getting organisations to engage with process-based management, you need to read this book.: Business Process Management and the Balanced Scorecard : Focusing Processes on Strategic Drivers Overview

America's Service Meltdown: Restoring Service Excellence in the Age of the Customer ReviewWith the first decade of the XXI century behind us, it was to be expected for organizations to have already achieved excellence in regards to customer service, since it seemed to be a must toward the end of the last century.

Mr. Pupo's book shows with amazing clarity how far a lot of organizations still are from offering an excellent customer service (the reader will no doubt feel identified with some of the situations presented), highlighting the fact that in order to achieve excellence in this subject, a strong resolve to want to make it happen must be present in the highest levels of an organization. Additionally, this conviction to customer service must be present in the organization's mission statement, objectives and strategies, as well as its policies and operational and management processes, particularly in its human resources, with special emphasis on its frontline workers. NEVERTHELESS, what is most important is for high-level executives and managers to be genuinely convinced about the need to perfect customer orientation and to show it in their day-to-day activities and decision-making.
Mr. Pupo's book analyzes the behavior of organizations in terms of being or not customer centered. At the same time, it is warning for the future, in terms of Mr. Pupo, because in this age of the Internet and digital communication, each day that goes by the costumer role changes from being someone subdued to becoming a demanding client with higher power.
Organizations planning to remain in this global market will have to reconsider their real interest on zeroing in their focus on the customer and, for those organizations, Mr. Pupo's book will no doubt be an excellent starting point.

Rapid Transformation: A 90-day Plan for Fast and Effective Change Review
With regard to this book's title and to the model that Behnam N. Tabrizi proposes in this volume, it is important to note at the outset that he does not believe that organizational transformation can be completed in only three months. What he offers is a framework with which to formulate a program that, once implemented, may require 6-12 additional months (or more) to achieve the desired objectives. The proposed model has these characteristics: all-encompassing (i.e. "all aspects of the company, looking under all the rocks and leaving no stones unturned"), integrative (i.e. "various functions and processes within the organization" are synchronized), fast (i.e. "fully engaged in all [its] efforts in parallel, looking at everything at once" expeditiously), and have full, passionate commitment and buy-in, "especially at the top layers of the organization."
Tabrizi rigorously examines six companies that have used the 90 days model: 3M, VeriSign, Nissan, Bay Networks, Apple, and ACI. All of them proceeded through a multi-phase process. Here's the timetable:
Pretransformation (30-90 days)
Phase 1: Diagnosis (30 days)
Phase 2: Envisioning the future (30 days)
Phase 3: Paving the road (30 days)
Transformation implementation (6-12 months)
Of course, these are general guidelines and the timetable will vary among organizations that commit themselves to transformation initiatives and progress of such initiatives will also vary, once formulated and then implemented. Barriers are inevitable and some will probably be the result of what James O'Toole has so aptly characterized as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom." He correctly points out that "today's executives believe they are struggling with an unprecedented leadership challenge to create internal strategic unity within a chaotic external environment." This challenge is exacerbated by the fact that so many companies are now competing in what Thomas Friedman has described as a "flat world."
Of special interest to me is what Tabrizi has to say about envisioning the future during the second phase, in Chapter 5. "Now, it is time for the teams to shift their focus and start looking at solutions for [the problems previously identified]. Over the next thirty days, with [various] pain points in mind, the teams will work on identifying various alternatives for treatment and remedy" by following this sequence: cascading goals > creating a set of metrics > rationalization of key areas > developing a set of "big ideas" > gap analysis > ongoing organizational excellence > get an early start on implementation [i.e. "picking low-hanging fruit" > Day 60 integration meeting > tiger teams. Tabrizi carefully explains what each of the steps in this sequence involves, and, correlates the importance of each to the other steps that precede and follow it. Along the way, he cites real-world examples from companies that include Hewlett-Packard, Apple, Nissan, VeriSign, Telefónica de España, Bay Networks, and The Home Depot. By the completion of Phase 2, teams will have "rationalized and streamlined their portfolio of products and services and used gap analysis of revenue projections...[and will have] developed their big ideas, which were recommendations shared with the EMT [i.e. executive management team] at the day 60 integration meeting. In some cases, new rapid response teams, called tiger teams, need to be created to address areas that have been previously ignored or overlooked."
Throughout the balance of his narrative, Tabrizi explains how to build on accomplishments achieved through the second phase so that those involved are well-prepared to meet the challenges that await them when they begin the 6-12 month process of full implementation. The model he proposes is not for every organization, as he duly acknowledges. Moreover, those organizations that that select it when planning and then implementing transformation initiatives must be sufficiently agile and flexible to make whatever modifications of the model may be necessary.
"However, it is only a matter of time before change is required again. The question then is, How do I continue to change before I have to? The beauty of the 90 days model is that it spins out an army of change agents with informal networks and experience working across numerous boundaries, and who have internalized change and the change process." Tabrizi then goes on to point out that, by creating an organization of change leaders that think outside the box, "the company will be better prepared to change in the future, fir employees will be less resistant and more experienced...Instead of being something to be feared, change becomes something that is empowering. Change promotes growth. And that is the ultimate power of transformation."
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out James O'Toole's Leading Change: The Argument for Values-Based Leadership, Corporate Agility: A Revolutionary Model for Competing in a Flat World co-authored by Charles E. Grantham, James P. Ware, and Cory Williamson, Kevan Hall's Speed Lead: Faster, Simpler Ways to Manage People, Projects and Teams in Complex Companies, Dean R. Crisis Leadership Now: A Real-World Guide to Preparing for Threats, Disaster, Sabotage, and Scandal ReviewDuring the past decade or so, this nation has endured some significant crises. Whether you're talking about Hurricane Katrina; the 9-11 attacks; Hurricane Hugo or the Oklahoma City bombings each crisis has left its mark on our country. However, the responses to those events were different and some were handled better than others. Experts agree that two critical components are necessary for successful crisis management, and those are leadership and planning. Author and renowned crisis management consultant, Laurence Barton points out that leaders with an existing action plan are much more likely to get their organizations through a high-level crisis compared to those that don't. In his book Crisis Leadership Now, Barton weaves together a safety net of procedure, HR practices and security to help mitigate crises from occurring while simultaneously helping devise workable plans that can withstand virtually any flavor of disaster. Soundview recommends this book because many organizations take disaster planning for granted. The reality of a major crisis impacting any given organization is not merely a question of "if it will happen" but rather "when it will happen." This book can help your organization think through your options and responses before the unthinkable occurs.Crisis Leadership Now: A Real-World Guide to Preparing for Threats, Disaster, Sabotage, and Scandal Overview

The Handbook of Large Group Methods: Creating Systemic Change in Organizations and Communities (Jossey-Bass Business & Management) ReviewBillie Alban and Barbara Bunker are well-known in the field of organization development, and in use of large group methods in particular. Their earlier work, Large Group Interventions, is considered THE basic introduction to the multiple methods that have developed for engaging whole systems in organizational change. The current book, which contains a wide range of case studies, shines because of Alban and Bunker's thorough analysis of what the studies have to say. Like good teachers they have organized the material in ways that make sense (e.g., "Working in Polarized and Politicized Environments," "Working Cross-Culturally"), allowing you to focus on the very issues that face you in your work with organizations. And like generous friends they share their own insights and experience, helping you to mine the case studies for all they are worth. I found myself reading all of what Alban and Bunker contributed and dipping in and out of the various case studies as particular issues caught my attention. I know this is a resource I will turn to again and again. The Handbook of Large Group Methods: Creating Systemic Change in Organizations and Communities (Jossey-Bass Business & Management) Overview

The Six Month Fix: Adventures in Rescuing Failing Companies ReviewThis is a great book on business turnarounds. It is eminently practical, humorous in spots and filled with interesting stories that highlight the advice being given.
The author offers 69 small chapters of advice. There's everything from what to do first on a turnaround... to how to get the best price selling your company. Nearly every page is heavily underlined in my book.
The topics that I particularly found valuable were: "Find the margin, cut all other costs"; "Specialize, do it where the margin lives, stop everything else"; "franchising is more about real estate than the business";his chapter on "make what sells" and the importance of low cost and his abundant advice on how to cut costs; his recommendations on increasing price on certain product types; setting your debt levels at the "10 year flood plain" for your company; demoting IT because it operates with its own agenda; stopping the CFO from gambling; cutting down on consultants and moving them over to more of a performance basis... well the topics go on, but you get the idea.
There's lots of advice. It's blunt and somewhat in your face. The text is easy to read and interesting too. There are lots of small stories that illustrate the points.
Overall I recommend this book most highly, not only for business turnarounds, but for any CEO or CEO wanna-bee. It would make a great book to take on business travel and read on the airplane. It's easy to read with the small chapters, and many topics. This is easily a 5 star book.

Starts with One, It: Changing Individuals Changes Organizations ReviewReally like this book...easy to read, different way of looking at a well-covered topic, keeps your interest. I took away a lot of insights from the book. I've read quite a few books and articles on change and leadership, and this book does not go through the same "list" of things to do to bring about change with a new set of vocabulary. It gets at the fundamental core of how to even influence/drive the "list". So many books just say do this or that (e.g. get buy-in to your vision) to enable change, but they never get at the process an individual goes through during the change (e.g. to individually buy-in) - which is the key to making it happen. There's been a fundamental missing link between management advice and the reality of cognitive psychology. That's one of the big things I like in this book. It makes that link in a pragmatic way. You get a sense of being better armed to attack the drivers, barriers and challenges to leading change.Starts with One, It: Changing Individuals Changes Organizations Overview

Strategic Organizational Change, Second Edition Review
This is one of two of Michael Beitler's books I recently read, the other being Strategic Organizational Learning. In the most successful organizations, both learning and change must always be "strategic" to ensure that they support initiatives which achieve and sustain continuous improvement in all areas and at all levels. In fact, as Michael Marquardt among others correctly insist, learning and change must not only be interdependent; they must occur simultaneously. That is essentially what "action learning" is all about and is most valuable only when in proper alignment with an organization's strategy. As Beitler clearly indicates in his earlier book, learning without then taking appropriate action demonstrates what Jeffrey Pfeffer and Robert Sutton characterize as the "Knowing-Doing Gap"; similarly, action without learning demonstrates what they characterize as the "Doing-Knowing Gap." In this volume, Beitler explains how to avoid or escape from such gaps while making certain that "all the horses are pulling in the same direction" because "all the organizational members are aware of the organization's mission and its strategy to fulfill that mission."
He offers a strategy-driven approach to the real-world practice of organizational change (OC) and has carefully organized his material within three parts: The Practice of Organizational Change (Chapters1-6), OC Interventions - Tools of the Profession (Chapters 7-12), and Other Issues in OC (Chapters13 and 14). Whenever I encounter a discussion of change initiatives, I am again reminded of what Peter Drucker said in an article which appeared in the Harvard Business Review in 1963: "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all." One of Beitler's most important points is that before formulating and then implementing an OC program, it is first necessary to decide (a) what needs to be changed, (b) why the changes are needed, and (c) which specific benefits such changes will produce. Otherwise, worth repeating, "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all."
It is worth noting that a high percentage of change initiatives fail. Reasons vary, of course, but one of the most common is what James O'Toole characterizes as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom." Some of Beitler's most valuable material is provided in Chapter 4, "Leading Versus Facilitating Change," as he examines a step-by-step process when leading change initiatives in the face of barriers such as those to which O'Toole refers.
Even an organizational change program such as the one Beitler provides in this volume, however, is doomed to failure unless and until everyone involved in the program knows how to overcome such barriers...and they must do so together, as an effective team, led by someone who possesses the requisite temperament and knowledge as well as skills which include what Beitler refers to as "political savvy." With uncommon precision and eloquence, Beitler explains how to achieve your organization's objectives, what ever their nature and extent may be.
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check of Beitler's Strategic Organizational Learning, Pfeiffer and Sutton's The Knowing-Doing Gap and their more recently published Hard Facts, Dangerous Half-Truths and Total Nonsense, O'Toole's Leading Change, Michael Hammer's The Agenda, and The Oz Principle co-authored by Tom Roger Connors, Tom Smith, and Craig Hickman as well as other sources provided in Beitler's Comprehensive Reference List.Strategic Organizational Change, Second Edition Overview
