Making Technology Investments Profitable: ROI Road Map from Business Case to Value Realization ReviewI've followed Jack Keen for a while and have really taken on his insights on recognizing what soft benefits can do for a company. A while ago I had the opportunity to present the ideas on soft benefits to the management and received some very positive feedback, which then led me to this book and after having read some pages online, I realized that even if I only used a small amount of all the presented information, it would still be well worth not only investing the money to buy it, but investing the time to read it.
I think more and more managers are realizing that with the current business climate (recession and tough competition etc), very little can be predicted; this also leads to that the investments are carefully reviewed and as a consequence of this, we tend to create a lot of drama in producing our cases, which essentially kills the idea before it begins. "Making Technology Investments Profitable" brings some fundamental ideas to the table and helps us take an objective perspective on the process.
The book provides:
1. A step by step methodology that erases the notion that only specialized people are able to articulate a business case.
2. The language is easy to understand and helps the specialized finance person articulate a methodology that the non-finance person can understand and apply while following the process(es).
3. It incorporates the soft (intangible) benefits in its methodology.
4. It has some great references to all the less than good things we all do, (both on the individual and company level) when dealing with the investment process. This is worth mentioning, because there are some good aha moments that helps the company (or person) identify and understand what might have gone wrong in the past.
5. And finally: it really makes you get the basic of basics: that it's all just common sense.
While my team and I are still polishing the material (for the new proposed process); we've already had a huge amount of positive feedback coming to us from several departments, wanting us to put this investment strategy forward so that we can enable other departments to originate or build their own case and allow them to tell their "story" the right way.
This book basically gives any company a chance to be competitive in the market and fundamentally change its attitude towards investments and engage the business in taking ownership of the process.

The Other 8 Hours: Maximize Your Free Time to Create New Wealth & Purpose ReviewI'm pretty shocked at the generally high reviews of this book. While I found there to be some vaguely useful tips, in general it's pretty long winded and short on usable info. In particular the folksy story that started each chapter were useless. The frequent references to church and the bible are fairly annoying and borderline preachy. How is it that he manages to incorporate faith in almost every chapter of a book on how to maximize your time??
In short I would say that if it hasn't occurred to you that watching less television would be a good way to increase productivity in the other 8 hours of your day, then you could probably benefit from reading this book. If you're already somewhat analytical about how you're spending your time, then this book might be a waste of your time.
I'm giving it a star for some useful websites that could be helpful in starting a business, but even then his treatment of how business are started isn't particularly thorough. He frequently mentions angel investors vs. VC investors without describing the important differences between the two. Is the author assuming his audience who doesn't know video games are a time suck already aware of the differences in these two important funding sources for getting their business off the ground?? Throughout the book the author recommends putting together an e-book to test the waters for your business idea, and in the end this book reads like a bunch of 20 page e-books compiled in to a collection of tips, not a comprehensive study on time management.
DO NOT PAY FOR THIS BOOK. Get it from your local library. The small amount of useful information is not worth the space it will occupy on your bookshelf. The Other 8 Hours: Maximize Your Free Time to Create New Wealth & Purpose Overview

The New Financial Capitalists: Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and the Creation of Corporate Value ReviewIf you are looking at what I have written, you must be considering buying this book. So I guess it's good for me to tell you what this book really is and where its strength lies. This book isn't a gossipy account of interesting people; it isn't (only) an account of what KKR did. It's certainly not a moral debate of whether Henry Kravis is a 'Barbarian'. My opinion is that this is a book which seriously attempts to tell us what leverage buyout really is; and the mentioning of KKR, its deals, its organizational strucuture etc, merely (in a sense) serve as illustrative examples. In other words, I think despite the fact that the authors have very meticulous account of things about KKR, they have something else in mind: the 'leverage buyout story' instead of 'the KKR story'. This is the main difference between this book and others belonging to the same topic. So if you are serious about learning something about leverage buyouts, read on.
The choice of topics and the quality of exposition of the book is truly unmatched by practically any business books I have ever read. That's the main reason behind the five stars. The analysis throughout, especially the middle chapters, is not yet, but close to academic. But wait, before destroying the online sales of the book by using the word 'academic', I must add that the usual attachment of being boring is absolutely absent. It is so well-written and you'll learn so much from the book that chapter 2 alone (or chp 3 or 4) is worth more than the price.
Finally, to give you more information, this is not a book of pathbreaking insights. But who cares? Every new business book claims itself to be a revolution: the 'everything you previously know about xxx is wrong' kind of slogan. In an age awashed with the chic of being new, Geroge Baker offers the rare gem of simply 'putting things into the right perspective'. You want to know somthing about buyouts? Here you are, crystal clear exposition, abundant historical background, good examples, careful documentation, serious analysis, and, well, maybe a little bit of gossip afterall. The New Financial Capitalists: Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and the Creation of Corporate Value Overview

Stalking the Black Swan: Research and Decision Making in a World of Extreme Volatility (Columbia Business School Publishing) ReviewIf you are serious about picking stocks, or making decisions generally, read this book. I am a portfolio manager that has valued the insights of Ken Posner for over a decade. I have long believed that the best and most useful analysts on Wall Street are the precious few that simply ask important questions about the companies they cover and set out to answer those questions without passion or prejudice. Peppered with what Charlie Munger calls "mental models", Ken explains how he does just that...and more. He reveals how he deals with the inevitable uncertainty in the answers he finds and, importantly, how he adjusts his conclusions for new information. Perhaps most interesting is the privilege of going along with Ken on his journey to revisit the recommendations he made on some of the most controversial financial companies during one of the most volatile times in modern financial history; essentially, a concentrated education in decision making during extreme uncertainty and volatility. Refreshingly, Ken balances academic contributions against the realities of a practitioner without jabbing at either side. The book is an essential read for all directors of research on both the "buyside" and "sellside" but also has broad appeal as a rare look into the mind of an effective decision-maker.Stalking the Black Swan: Research and Decision Making in a World of Extreme Volatility (Columbia Business School Publishing) Overview

Power Mentoring: How Successful Mentors and Proteges Get the Most Out of Their Relationships ReviewTo demonstrate how "power mentoring" works in practice, authors Ellen Ensher and Susan Murphy provide down-to-earth interviews with about 50 pairs of high-powered mentors and their protégés. The conversations offer useful nuggets of insight about office politics, job advancement and successful networking. In addition, unlike many books on the topic, this one provides a useful snapshot of the issues, dramas and special challenges women and minorities in the modern workplace face - and the picture is not always pretty. The book's biggest flaws are its redundancy and use of boardroom clichés. Still, we recommend this personalized, practical book to potential mentor-protégé teams.Power Mentoring: How Successful Mentors and Proteges Get the Most Out of Their Relationships Overview

Angel Financing for Entrepreneurs: Early-Stage Funding for Long-Term Success ReviewI did, so I bought five books. I will review them from worst to best.
"Finding an Angel Investor In a Day," by The Planning Shop (2007), told me nothing I didn't know, and I didn't know anything about business plans or angel investors. The title is ludicrous and the advice is obvious, e.g., "Your business plan should be concise, compelling, and irresistible to investors." 1 star.
"The ABC's of Writing Winning Business Plans," by Garrett Sutton (2005), walks you through writing business plans for a lawn mowing business and buying a pizza restaurant. If your business is more complicated, this is not the book for you. 1 star.
"The Ernst & Young Business Plan Guide," by Brian Ford, Jay Boorstein, and Patrick Pruitt (2007), is a good book but hardly inspiring or insightful. If you follow this book your business plan will be competent but won't grab investors. 3 stars.
"Angel Financing for Entrepreneurs," by Susan Preston (2007). This book doesn't explain how to write a business plan, but it explains how to make a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation to investors -- a presentation that will grab investors. For example, one question is "How is your product or technology scalable?" I also learned some of the financials that angel investors look for, such as what IRR is expected. This book helped and inspired me to write an excellent presentation, that became the basis for my business plan. 5 stars.
"Raising Venture Capital for the Serious Entrepreneur," by Dermot Berkery (2008). This is a textbook for a business school course about venture capital. This book is full of insights. Every few pages new ideas would compel me to go to my computer and add stuff or rewrite my business plan, for example, Berkery emphasizes the need for clear milestones. Preston mentioned milestones but didn't make it clear why they are so important. The financials that were briefly presented in Preston's book are thoroughly presented in Berkery's book, for example, what gross margin investors look for (80% or more) and why they need such extremely profitable products or services. Plus you learn the jargon or key phrases of venture capitalists, e.g., "a large but well signaled market," the importance of "market power" and an effective "route to customers." I feel that my business plan now speaks to investors in their language, with the numbers they are looking for. 5 stars.Angel Financing for Entrepreneurs: Early-Stage Funding for Long-Term Success Overview

Practice Made (More) Perfect: Transforming a Financial Advisory Practice Into a Business (Bloomberg Financial) ReviewPractice Made (More) Perfect is both an impassioned account of leadership in the advisory industry and an innovative "owners-manual" for transforming a professional services practice. The book succeeds brilliantly on both fronts. The authors' premise is that the independent advisory industry is maturing, and advisory firms are becoming bigger and more complex enterprises. At the same time, most industry leaders lack formal training or experience in managing growing businesses with many moving parts.
The revised edition of this book first came to my attention while I was attending Pershing's INSITE 2011 Conference. I'm seeking a business development specialist role within the independent RIA channel, and I applaud these two practice management thought leaders for updating the original 2005 text to navigate the challenges of a slower growth environment.
Having been in and around the advisory business for many years, Mark and Rebecca have found that the most successful advisory firms have several common characteristics:
*Clear idea of their strategy and positioning
*Human capital plan aligned with their vision
*A compensation plan that reinforces owners' vision for the business
*Active management of profitability
*Built-in leverage and capacity.
The authors provide a straightforward and actionable approach to even the most abstract of these concepts. In the interest of brevity, the following is a summary of what I feel are the most notable concepts contained within this book.
Strategic Planning
For most financial advisors, strategic planning is such an overwhelming process that it's frequently ignored. It's not always obvious to me what makes a particular firm unique in the marketplace by studying their Web site, regulatory filings or the many "top" advisor or wealth manager lists. The authors suggest that strategy is not just about marketing; rather, it is how you inform your investment in technology, people, processes, positioning, and the client service experience. Without this framework, it is difficult to define your optimal client, the organizational structure best suited to satisfy clients' needs, your pricing strategy, and your approach to compensation. A central theme throughout the book is that the operations function is growing in strategic value, yet the biggest weakness in advisory firms is the lack of leadership and a career track in operations.
Human Captial
One of the major issues advisors are wrestling to resolve is the challenge of hiring and keeping the right talent. The single biggest reason for turnover in a financial advisory practice is poor selection of candidates. The authors suggest the widening experience gap between owners and staff is because, "owners of advisory firms have not invested time, money, or trust in the development of those who work for them and, in many cases, live in fear that their employees might outshine them." While this passage may cause many advisors to bristle, it does merit serious consideration when you consider the high cost of employee turnover. Although not necessarily the book's target demographic, Gen Y advisors will benefit by closely studying the section on how to make a partner.
Compensation Planning
The authors provide a formal process for structuring pay that positions compensation as an investment in which to get a return rather than a cost to be controlled. The sample compensation philosophy statement on page 136 provides a powerful decision-making tool for structuring the key components of compensation. The book provides a clear explanation of the difference between a bonus and an incentive. The authors believe the later is more effective at eliciting a desired behavior. I found this section extremely helpful in interpreting the compensation and staffing data published by InvestmentNews/Moss Adams, Quantuvis and FA Insight. At the end of the day, the authors emphasize that money is never a substitute for active management.
Financial Management
The book's discussion of financial management techniques is based on the assumption that industry profit margins will remain under pressure as advisors navigate through the challenges of pricing, productivity, service mix, client mix, and rising costs. Accounting and financial management are fundamental to running any enterprise, yet most practitioners have not been trained to use their financial data to effectively manage their businesses. The chapters on financial management techniques are accessible to the layman and serve as a thoughtful, structured, analytical guide to use financial data to effectively manage a firm.
Built-in Leverage and Capacity
The authors believe the advisory business is eminently scalable, but building leverage and capacity requires a quantum leap in how advisors structure and manage their practices. Critical mass is one of those elusive management concepts that the book does an excellent job demystifying. Simply put, it now appears that $5 million in annual revenue is the new level of critical mass where a firm is achieving optimal efficiency in its cost structure, optimal profitability based on its client service model, and optimal effectiveness in the number of clients it can serve well.
In many cases, a Founders' ownership stake represents years of heartache and sacrifice. It is also an asset that must ultimately generate a sufficient return on investment. In this context, one of the book's main themes is particularly compelling: Advisors who build a business to last have created a business to sell. Armed with the lessons in Practice Made (More) Perfect, advisors will go a long way toward taking their firm to the next level.

The Complete Guide to Capital Markets for Quantitative Professionals (McGraw-Hill Library of Investment and Finance) ReviewIt is crucial to the success of a technologist on Wall Street to have a fluent understanding of the traders they support: More focused feature sets are developed, faster communication with traders (they have about a 2-second attention span) and correct assumptions are made.
Unfortunately, working in technology tends to isolate oneself from the trading floor. This is not necessary. Although, there are plenty of classics out there (read Fabozzi), they don't target the technologist who hasn't grown up on the trading floor. They still don't answer the questions, "Why would you do that", "What's the purpose", "What's driving everything"
This book turns the whole model upside down. The author goes into a very detailed and interesting history of the markets first. Then goes into the main areas any financial group handles: Treasuries, Futures, Interest Rate, Agencies, Options, Corporates (We won't mention mortgage).
After reading just the Treasuries and Futures section, I IMMEDIATELY saw a difference in my ability to communicate with the desk. I was able to suggest alternative approaches concerning enhancements and features, understand when problems arose, plus I actually understood EVERYTHING the trader said.
If you work in technology, be it QA, Software Development or even technology management, this is a must read.
Best of all, it's a great read. I found myself looking forward to reading the book every single day.

Personal Finance ReviewThis is a very good book on personal finance. It is laid out well and easy to understand. Unfortunately, once you get past the basics (personal budgeting, cash flow statements) and start getting into more specifics, the information contained within the book is no longer accurate. With the turmoil of both the banking and finance industries over the past few years, several parts of the book no longer contain accurate information. While I am not a fan of publishers releasing updated versions of their textbooks, this is a rare case in which a revised edition is warranted.Personal Finance Overview

Rites of Passage at $100,000 to $1 Million+: Your Insider's Lifetime Guide to Executive Job-Changing and Faster Career Progress in the 21st Century ReviewAfter 10 months of being an unemployed executive, I stumbled across this book. I wish someone had told me the 2 truths I am about to tell you! If you are an executive, do not -under any circumstances- contact a recruiter without reading this book. Secondly, do not -under any circumstances- post your resume on the Web without studying the chapter about the Internet. Let's face it, as an execuitve, it's sometimes feasible to sneak by pretending to know more than you do. But when it comes to getting your next job, what you don't know is detrimental. And all of the typical "get a better job" books don't cater to executives. Trust me, the time to get educated about the world of recruiting and executive level job changing is while you are still employed. And the place to get educated is Rites of Passage. Then just when you think you've gotten all possible benefit from the book, it's time to visit Lucht's Website, RiteSite.com for more. P.S. Investment Titans: Investment Insights from the Minds that Move Wall Street ReviewThis book is the nonmath, condensed books version of much of the financial theory written by academics about stock investing, plus some perspectives by outstanding practitioners. If you can understand the math, you will learn a lot more by reading the original works. If you cannot, these side-by-side comparisons are not examined in enough depth to help you understand who's right and who's out of date. The book is well written though, for what it is. The book's concept is simply mistargeted from what investors need to know.
Of the thinkers who were interviewed for this book, the most useful information comes from John Bogle, Gary Brinson, Richard Thaler, Joseph Lakonishok, and Jeremy Siegel. You can read any of several books by John Bogle that are more helpful than this book, such as Bogle on Mutual Funds or Common Sense about Mutual Funds. Jeremy Siegel's Stocks for the Long Run is a classic that anyone can learn from. The Lakonishok studies suggest lots of inefficiency in the markets that Brinson talks about. Thaler's work is cutting edge in helping people understand the systematic tendency for professional and amateur investors to make mistakes.
If you ignore the Markowitz, Samuelson, Bernstein, and Sharpe material in the book, you will have missed relatively little.
Modern financial practice has moved well beyond the original academic perspectives built around the theoretical assumption of a perfectly informed and rational market composed of identically-minded investors. Those useful research-based distinctions are not made here.
If you want to understand what you should be doing as an investor, I would suggest looking elsewhere. Depending on your goals and circumstances, different paths may make sense for you. If you are between 46 and 56, I suggest that you start with Charles Schwab's new book, You're 50 -- Now What?
Of the key lessons in the book, you should pay most attention to the advice to diversify, hold as much in common stocks as your risk profile allows you to do, stay invested all the time, keep costs down (taxes, fees, and trading charges), focus on indexes of sectors that have historically outperformed (such as small cap, value stocks), start investing as soon as you can, add to your investments as much as possible, and . . . leave well enough alone (forget about chasing the latest hot stock or manager to try to beat the averages -- past performance is not an indicator of what will come next).
If you do decide to read this book, check your behavior against the principles I have just listed above. Most people violate these concepts, and have missed the chance to make more money.
May you achieve all of your financial goals!Investment Titans: Investment Insights from the Minds that Move Wall Street Overview

Pricing with Confidence: 10 Ways to Stop Leaving Money on the Table Review
I liked this book a lot. I thought it was well outlined and well written. The book's overall message is that the small business owner should link prices to the value delivered. The reader should be able to optimize pricing for her services or products after considering the 10 rules of pricing presented in this book:
1. Generally, don't let the customer talk you down in price
2. Price your service or product at a level that a customer is willing to pay if they understand the value of your service or product
3. Know which of three pricing strategies you are using and stick to it
4. It's OK to negotiate price with customers, but make sure you win
5. It's OK to lower prices, but only in order to increase profits
6. Expand your offerings so you aren't locked into one price for one product
7. Great pricing will often force your competition to react to your pricing
8. Your company's sales force has to be expert at why and how you priced your services or products
9. Set prices based on value - not on cost-plus
10. Always keep in mind you are in business to make a profit without leaving money on the table
I loved the instruction that the author provides regarding how an owner of a small business has to be willing (and able) to fire unprofitable clients and customers. Business people who compete on price are playing a fool's game. Smart business owners understand that value is the basis for business exchange and that to be successful at business one must FULLY understand value. This book puts forth a pretty good effort to help the reader fully understand value, or at least how to go about fully understanding value after doing a little investigation and research of the market.
Pricing goods and/or services is far from simple. And setting an optimal price is one of the most difficult decisions to make when starting a business. Furthermore, as a business grows and matures pricing at an optimal level continues to be difficult. Prices never stay the same because demand never stays the same. To do this well one must know the market (competitors & customers), know the costs, know the perceived value, and know the actual value.
Getting a handle on all this is not particularly easy. This is especially true because customers are often times very hard to figure out. Some are price buyers, some are value buyers, some are relationship buyers, and some are poker-playing buyers. Knowing these four types of buyers is a heads up for the small business person. But he or she still has to read the customer and figure out which one of these four the customer is before negotiations can be performed in favor of the seller. Read this book and start on your path of being a better pricer of your services or goods. 5 stars!Pricing with Confidence: 10 Ways to Stop Leaving Money on the Table Overview

Up Your Business: 7 Steps to Fix, Build, or Stretch Your Organization ReviewI've read a lot of business success books in the past 10 years, but this is by far the best. Dave isn't just an author, he speaks from experience and shares his own pitfalls and successes. This is more than just a book...its a step by step primer for both business neophytes and experienced entrepeneurs. Dave talks about the importance of hiring the right people..and specific ideas on how to do just that. The book is clear, concise and easy to read. Dave really understands the importance of 'leading' rather than just 'managing.' I just bought 20 copies of this book for our key personnel (it will be mandatory reading) and several copies for some of our clients. I will probably purchase more copies within the next few months.Up Your Business: 7 Steps to Fix, Build, or Stretch Your Organization Overview

The Business of Investment Banking: A Comprehensive Overview ReviewThis is an excellent book for anyone wondering what Investment Banking is all about, but who doesn't want to learn how to price a company. It describes in sufficient detail, for the reader to understand, the concepts underlying Investment Banking and what they really do in the Investment Banking world as well as explaining in easy (relatively) terms the jargon that is used in the business.
If you want the theoretical underpinnings of the financial world, this book is not for you. If, on the other hand, you're an aspiring Investment Banker that wants to know what it is all abour or if you're just curious about what the Investment Banking business is about: buy this book as a primer/introduction and if you find it interesting, search for a more theoretical book. The Business of Investment Banking: A Comprehensive Overview Overview
